Gestational diabetes is the type of diabetes that we seldom hear of. It is where a women who have not been diagnosed diabetes before, develops high blood glucose level during pregnancy. Only 2% – 7% of pregnancies are affected by this condition but it is not to be taken lightly because there are no specific causes identified which means it could happen to any expecting mothers.

During pregnancy, the hormones produced acts differently – it increases the resistance to insulin thus impairing the body’s glucose tolerance. Gestational diabetes happens when the blood sugar is raised but the pregnant mother’s body is unable to produce enough insulin to overcome the high blood sugar. This could not only be harmful to the pregnant woman but also to the child she is carrying. The child could develop complications such as jaundice, excess growth, type 2 diabetes and more.

As mentioned above, there are no specific causes known to lead to gestational diabetes but there are risk factors involved. Those to be careful are pregnant women above age 25, with history of obesity, with family history of diabetes and with ethnic background (Asian, Hispanic or American Indian is most susceptible).

It is vital to practice a healthy lifestyle to treat or curb this disease.

It is important to exercise and try to maintain pregnancy weight. Always follow a gestational diabetes diet; avoid sugar and foods that is high in sugar, go for complex carbohydrates from food such as bread, potatoes and pasta, go for unsaturated fats instead of food with saturated fats, eat the right snacks and pile in food with fiber. All these helps control blood sugar level from rising.

There are gestational diabetes menu ideas that are excellent for this program. The menu contains suggestions of what to eat for each meal of the day; breakfast, lunch, dinner and even include gestational diabetes snack ideas

for times you feel peckish. The ideas are all base on nutritional factors and are specifically to control blood sugar level.

Pregnant women do not need to be anxious because the diet is not rigid but rather manageable. The key is portion and carb and sugar control. With that you can even snack on popcorn and pretzels if you want to.

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of wellnessdaily.com. All opinions are 100% mine.

I think I’m not alone when I say I gained a few pounds after the Chinese New Year. It’s been a non-stop food trail for all of us celebrating the festive occasion.

As always I pushed the word “diet” to the back of my mind and treated myself with cookies and candies and the delicious elaborated home cooked meal and now i’m suffering from guilt and worst, the excess fat around my waist.

I even forgot about my New Year resolution which is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, eat healthy and control my weight. I’ve zero motivation.

Sounds familiar?

It’s really difficult to watch my weight when there are so many challenges and distraction along the road, not to mention my lack of determination.

I’ve tried diet pills before but that didn’t work because the pills that I bought made me nausea and my heart bit became irregular. Then i tried slimming juices that only made me suffer bouts of diarrhea so I stopped using it. I tried so many different type of diets but I didn’t know the correct way to see it through.

Before Chinese New Year I started to jog. It felt great but now i can’t even get myself to go to the park. Sigh…

Recently I’ve stumbled upon a website (www.wellnessdaily.com) that is kind of great for weight watchers and health enthusiasts, especially for beginners like me. It’s an online community that provides news and extensive information about practicing healthy lifestyle.

There are recipes, videos, discussion topics sharing tips and information on how to eat right and maintain our health not to mention topics on weight loss. There’s a very interesting article I especially like about how dancing could help you lose weight.

I think having a specific online hub is important as we get to share our experiences and obtain valuable information that will help us achieve our goal. From here I think we could get a better idea on how and motivation to have a balanced lifestyle.

By the way, wellnessdaaily.com is now having a Twitter contest with a prize package of coupons for a year-long supply of Jennie-O Turkey Store product and a one-year gym membership, valued at $1,250 up for grabs. The contest runs from 24/02/2010 and ends on 10/03/2010.

“Enter to win $ towards a gym membership & JENNIE-O turkey products. Just follow @wellness_daily & RT this! http://bit.ly/tbd123."

How Wheat Works

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Wheat Food Council. All opinions are 100% mine.

Wheat is perceived as the top three food sources next to grains and rice and it has many uses. It’s used to make flour for breads, biscuits, cakes, noodles among others and to make beer and breakfast cereal. The uses of wheat goes on and on. I for one love wheat products especially breads; not only for it’s great taste but mostly for it’s nutritional value.

Wheat germ is a great source of protein, carbohydrate, iron and dietary fiber. A little bit of wheat germ everyday will guide you to a road of a healthier life. Wheat germ can dissolves cholesterol, fight heart disease, and also defend the body against cancer.

Now that you know the basic information about wheat let me tell you something interesting related to wheat. How Wheat Works is now running an interactive online program that delivers a farm-to-fork education on wheat, enabling a better understanding of its nutritional value. Go to www.HowWheatWorks.com and you’ll find out all you need to know about the benefit of wheat and to get a better knowledge of how wheat is grown.

Better yet, do participate in their very special program and help grow, harvest and mill their own wheat kernels virtually. The program has four phases which you will have to log in to the website to complete each phases each day for the span of four days. The phases included is growth, harvest, milling/baking and the grocer’s aisle where you can create your desired wheat food. The type of wheat to be grown and wheat flour to be milled is entirely up to you as you are under control. It’s really a fun and interactive game to do with the family and for kids especially.

Note, another benefit for participating in this program is that for each participant that completes this program, the Council will donate two pounds of flour, up to 90,000 pounds, to Operation Homefront, a non-profit that provides assistance to needy U.S. troops and their families. That’s killing two birds with one stone.

How Wheat Works are also extending this program to the youth through Wheat Foods Council dedicated to increase wheat and other grain foods consumption while disseminating and education of the nutritional value and other promotional programs.

Enjoy a healthy lifestyle!

Rodents in the Kitchen

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Victor® Rodent Control. All opinions are 100% mine.

We have been having pest problems especially rats running around our house for a long time now. The rats are very huge too which is really disgusting and the worst thing is the rats aren’t afraid of us; they are getting braver and braver. Sometimes even when the whole family is watching television in the living room, a rat would just crawl up onto the couch to get across to the window sill.

Then there’s the problem with their waste. Our store room reeks of rat urine and there are holes bitten by the rats. Mom is really freaked out about it.

We’ve tried most of everything. We cleaned out our store room and the whole house. That didn’t help. After a while the rats were back. Our neighbors are having the same problem too. Some time ago, they tried using rat poison but that just left rat carcass all over the street in front of our neighborhood and i’m afraid that my dogs will accidentally eat the poison.

Recently i heard of another easy way to repel rodents and it’s without harm to us or to the environment too. The Victor® Sonic PestChaser® PRO uses high frequency sound waves to drive rodents away. There are no side effects because no poison or pesticides are used. The non-repetitive sound waves emitted by the rodent repellent with a distinct spike in sound (46.5kHz) replicates the sound of a dominant male rodent therefore scaring away the real rodents.

To rodent proof your home, i think this is the best and the safest way and it’s easy enough. No more disgusting rats roaming the compound and no more smelly carcass to dispose.

For more information on how ultrasonic repellents work please visit the website.
