Here is the Kedai Makanan Teochew or better known as Porridge Restaurant that opens till the wee hours of the morning.

Located at Pudu, the boyfriend had visited the shop at 4am after a long hour of OT at work. Even at that early there were many customers enjoying the yummy porridge. Well, it is good for business when there are clubs nearby and right above the shop is a “dodgy motel” according to the boyfriend LOL.

It’s actually been around for ages and was once quite popular, now there aren’t as many patrons in the daytime but still many frequents it at night.

We were in town that weekend (i had to make an errand at KLCC) and we were feeling peckish.

I suggested we have porridge since we were in the vicinity. It’d just opposite the now demolished Pudu Jail.

The shop is the average Chinese coffee shop; narrow and with a few tables but you can sit at the table at the neighboring coffee shop (the shops are connected within).

They serves rice or the watery Teochew porridge with a variety of side dishes mostly made up of braised meats and pickled vegetable which are laid out in trays near the entrance .

We had a difficult time choosing the dishes. In the end we settled with our familiar favorites. :)

Braised peanuts! I must have peanuts with porridge. Always.

Minced pork with preserved radishes (choy pou). Yum!

The boyfriend’s fav, braised pig intestines.

Preserved mustard cabbage (mui choy).

I wanted to get salted eggs but unfortunately there were none. I think they ran out of those.

Overall, we had a satisfying meal and the side dishes definitely complement the watery porridge. Not the best one i’ve had but it was good nevertheless. Everything cost us RM20.00 inclusive of 2 glass of cincau (grass jelly with syrup drink).

Courtesy of YTL! LOL

Mr. Siew Bao is available at the Lot 10 Hutong Gourmet Heritage Village (the food court). Also at Sunway Pyramid and now in Plaza Mont Kiara as well. The canary yellow themed outlet selling fresh pastry and treats is hard to miss.

Mr Siew Bao is famous for (yes you’ve got that right!) siew bao which the recipe originates from the famous Kee Mei Siew Pao from Seremban. If you have tried the original Seremban siew bao then you would know how good this is.

Crispy on the outside and totally delicious!

Also available are other delicacies like egg tarts, lou poh peng, yam cakes and winter melon biscuits.

It was a nice morning in town. It’s a miracle that we were up so early (it’s barely 9.30am) being it a Saturday morning! Weekends are usually reserved for sleep ins till late noon.

That particular morning i had an appointment at the dermatologist with Dr. Ting. There were already a crowd in the clinic so after i took my number from the nurse we went out for breakfast.

Restoran Win Heng Seng

I don’t know why i have not noticed this before but right opposite from the clinic is Restoran Win Heng Seng. All these while we were visiting the dermatologist, we failed to notice there was hawker food available on the opposite road.

The coffee shop was already crowded with customers enjoying breakfast. We found a table and ordered.

Sai Dou Hor Fun

It’s been some time since we had breakfast so early in the morning. It was great.

The food here is rather good and very affordable. I forgot the price but i think the Sai Dou Hor Fun and Chee Cheong Fun we had was around RM5.00 or less each.

Chee Cheong Fun

And yes! I had milo kosong, my favorite thing to drink for breakfast at Chinese coffee shops. Yum!

Milo Kosong

I found out later that this particular shop was known as Restoran Weng Hing before they renovated last year) is rather popular and have large amount of followers. They even have a facebook account!

Apparently, the mini egg tart available here is a must have.

Just look at the queue.

Queuing for mini egg tarts

While i was enjoying my hor fun, the boyfriend asked me if i wanted egg tarts. I asked him whether it was any good here and he replied “I don’t know but look behind you… the queue so long means it must be darn good lar”.

Unfortunately, we were too full by the time we were done with our food (we don’t eat a lot in the morning). Next time, i’ll be sure to try the egg tarts!

Jarrod & Rawlins

Hello there, did you have a good night sleep last night?

I bet you slept like a baby after the World Cup is finally over. LOL. It’s another 4 years till we get to be immerse in the excitement and sleepless nights of football and partying. Till then, it’s back to mundane life of going to work and watching drama series on the tele.

Jarrod & Rawlins
Jarrod & Rawlins

The night of the World Cup finale was coincidently our anniversary. It’s our 4th by the way :) .

As always there was the problem of deciding where to dine. Japanese and Korean food are our favorite but we just couldn’t decide so scratch that plan, instead we went to Jarrod and Rawlins.

You must think that it’s not really a romantic place to spend anniversaries. Plus that being being the day of the last match of World Cup (Netherlands vs. Spain), the place must be crowded by crazy football fans getting drunk on cheap beer at the Happy Hour World Cup promotion.

J & R
J & R and the expats *grin*

The trick is, visit the Ampwalk, Ampang outlet instead of the more popular outlets (Sri Hartamas and Damansara Heights) where it’s bound to be crowded. Sure it’s rather tedious to be driving all the way to KL centre but the privacy is worth it.

Another reason to visit this particular outlet is that it’s a natural haunt for expats and tourist staying nearby. See the pic above, i’m not kidding. Dream of being an expat’s wife? Here’s the place to hangout LOL. I’m kidding.

kilkenny
Kilkenny 1/2 pint

The boyfriend frequent this J & R outlet because it’s near his work place. He goes happy hour, drinking sessions with his bosses here a lot.

Usually it’s full to the brim with drinking angmohs but in the weekend it’s quiet and nice. They have a separate area for dining and drinking so it’s good.

leffe blonde
Leffe Blonde

We settle down quickly and placed our orders.

You can either order from the menu or choose your won meat and cooking preference from the deli counter up front. They have all kind of meat and side dish to choose from. Of course they charge you per-weight and there’s a cooking price per head (RM12.00) but i definitely recommend having your personal menu. The meat here is awesome.

However, i was starving mad so we just took a quick look at the menu and ordered from there. The boyfriend promised that we would pick from the deli counter on our next visit. Yay!

1 can of Luffe Blonde
1 can of Leffe Blonde served in a wine glass

While the staffs were preparing our food, our drinks came.

Omg! I found another love, Leffe Blonde!  I’m fast becoming a great fan of beer although i can’t stomach more than 2 pint but the taste is fantastic. Leffe Blonde is a Belgium beer and it is good, better and smoother than Kilkenny and i think quite similar to Weihenstephan but i need to have them both together to be sure haha.

It’s quaintly served in a wine glass.

Love it.

large grill chjicken salad
Large Grilled Chicken Salad

Then came the food.

First we had Large Grillled Chicken Salad with feta cheese and olive. Once i saw that this salad have feta cheese in it, i’ve got to have it. I totally love feta!

The salad was awesome. I didn’t care much for the lettuce (i prefer Romaine lettuce to leaf lettuce) or the aragula but the cheese was great and the grilled chicken was absolutely delicious. Grilled to perfection, it was piquant with the sides crispy.

Guinnes Beef Stew with Mashed Potato
Guinness Beef Stew with creamy mashed potato

The boyfriend definitely liked the Guinness Beef Stew with creamy mashed potato.

I found the beef a little hard but i liked it, it was definitely tasty. The stew… or should i say the sauce was sweet and thick and the mashed potato was just right. Paired together it was delicious.

Serano Ham and Bacon Pasta
Serano Ham & Bacon Pasta

Serano Ham & Bacon Pasta with dried chili and olive oil was something different.

First of all i liked it because it’s cooked using linguine pasta which absorbs better than normal round pasta, then i love it because the sauce is thick but dry.

Sometimes you get really runny sauce that when you twirl it into a bundle with the fork and put it in your mouth then slurp the end that got away, you get sauces on the chin. I hate that.

Anyways the ham and bacon bits were great.

pork roast sandwich
Pork Roast Sandwich

Aha! Here comes the star of the evening.

I know that having sandwich for dinner isn’t really appropriate but we couldn’t resist it.

Here you can customize about any dish you want. You can make your personal salad or sandwiches too. All you need to do is to fill in the form left on the table, tick the ingredients you want before the staff whisk the paper away. In a minute or two you have your favorite sandwich in front of you.

This is what we had:

White toasted bread

Roast Pork

Lettuce

Rocket

Olive

Feta Cheese

Balsamic vinegar

Branston pickle

Onion

thick sandwich
Yummy!

Like i say the meat here is fantastic. The roast pork is to die for! The skin so crunchy!

The combination of all the ingredient we selected were awesome. Yum yum *rubs tummy*.

It was a surprise that the bill just came under RM180.00 seeing that we had 3 beers. Not bad at all.

Large Grillled Chicken Salad – RM23.00
Guinness Beef Stew & Creamy Mashed Potato – RM29.00
Serano Ham & Bacon Pasta – RM32.00
Roast Pork Sandwich – RM20.00 (Sandwich Base RM9.00 + Roast Pork RM4.00 + Feta Cheese RM4.00 + Rocket RM3.00)
Leffe Blonde – RM21.00
Kilkenny 1/2 pint (Happy Hour) x 2 – RM32.00

Total: RM180.55 inclusive of 5% gov tax + 10% serv chrg

De Pastry Chef

Japan lost to Paraguay! What a waste, despite being a football dummie i was rooting for our Asian team. But Japan is out although i must commend them on a well played game. It was a tough fight.

I guess a lot of us was really looking forward to the match because all the mamak stalls and cafes at Bandar Menjalara were really packed. Even De Pastry Chef was crowded with people watching the game.

De Pastry Chef

Anyway, the boyfriend was craving for cakes after i fed him with a piece of really delicious and moist chocolate cake during dinner. LOL. It was late and the only bakery shop nearby that’s still open was the De Pastry Shop which only closes at midnight.

Packaging

The selection of dessert and pastries were plenty. All the cakes looks really good and average at the price of RM6-RM7.

The boyfriend bought himself a piece of Hungaria Walnut cake for RM7. I was torn between the blackforest cake or the blueberry cheese cake but in the end decided not to have any LOL.

Hungaria Walnut

The Hungaria Walnut was rather good although i didn’t liked the cream on top which taste too eggy and runny (like King’s cake)… if you know what i mean. I liked that the cake was moist and not overly sweet or too over-whelming. It has a slight coffee taste to it with of course chopped pieces of walnut for crunchiness.

I’ve yet to try the other food available here (sandwiches, pasta, soup) at pretty affordable price. Maybe some other time.
