Here is the Kedai Makanan Teochew or better known as Porridge Restaurant that opens till the wee hours of the morning.

Located at Pudu, the boyfriend had visited the shop at 4am after a long hour of OT at work. Even at that early there were many customers enjoying the yummy porridge. Well, it is good for business when there are clubs nearby and right above the shop is a “dodgy motel” according to the boyfriend LOL.

It’s actually been around for ages and was once quite popular, now there aren’t as many patrons in the daytime but still many frequents it at night.

We were in town that weekend (i had to make an errand at KLCC) and we were feeling peckish.

I suggested we have porridge since we were in the vicinity. It’d just opposite the now demolished Pudu Jail.

The shop is the average Chinese coffee shop; narrow and with a few tables but you can sit at the table at the neighboring coffee shop (the shops are connected within).

They serves rice or the watery Teochew porridge with a variety of side dishes mostly made up of braised meats and pickled vegetable which are laid out in trays near the entrance .

We had a difficult time choosing the dishes. In the end we settled with our familiar favorites. :)

Braised peanuts! I must have peanuts with porridge. Always.

Minced pork with preserved radishes (choy pou). Yum!

The boyfriend’s fav, braised pig intestines.

Preserved mustard cabbage (mui choy).

I wanted to get salted eggs but unfortunately there were none. I think they ran out of those.

Overall, we had a satisfying meal and the side dishes definitely complement the watery porridge. Not the best one i’ve had but it was good nevertheless. Everything cost us RM20.00 inclusive of 2 glass of cincau (grass jelly with syrup drink).

Penang Recipe @ 1 Utama shopping mall serves famous Penang style food. The main kitchen is in Kota Damansara by the name Penang Street Cafe.

Though not as delicious as the food in Penang, they do have decent food here.

There’s the usual nasi lemak, kuey teow, asam laksa, spring rolls and etc.

The asam laksa is not bad and i like the prawn mee which is not oily.

The price is alright too; in nett price with no government tax or service tax.

Assam Laksa – RM6.90
Prawn Mee – RM7.90
Cincau x 2 – RM5.00

Total: RM19.80

Courtesy of YTL! LOL

Mr. Siew Bao is available at the Lot 10 Hutong Gourmet Heritage Village (the food court). Also at Sunway Pyramid and now in Plaza Mont Kiara as well. The canary yellow themed outlet selling fresh pastry and treats is hard to miss.

Mr Siew Bao is famous for (yes you’ve got that right!) siew bao which the recipe originates from the famous Kee Mei Siew Pao from Seremban. If you have tried the original Seremban siew bao then you would know how good this is.

Crispy on the outside and totally delicious!

Also available are other delicacies like egg tarts, lou poh peng, yam cakes and winter melon biscuits.

It was a nice morning in town. It’s a miracle that we were up so early (it’s barely 9.30am) being it a Saturday morning! Weekends are usually reserved for sleep ins till late noon.

That particular morning i had an appointment at the dermatologist with Dr. Ting. There were already a crowd in the clinic so after i took my number from the nurse we went out for breakfast.

Restoran Win Heng Seng

I don’t know why i have not noticed this before but right opposite from the clinic is Restoran Win Heng Seng. All these while we were visiting the dermatologist, we failed to notice there was hawker food available on the opposite road.

The coffee shop was already crowded with customers enjoying breakfast. We found a table and ordered.

Sai Dou Hor Fun

It’s been some time since we had breakfast so early in the morning. It was great.

The food here is rather good and very affordable. I forgot the price but i think the Sai Dou Hor Fun and Chee Cheong Fun we had was around RM5.00 or less each.

Chee Cheong Fun

And yes! I had milo kosong, my favorite thing to drink for breakfast at Chinese coffee shops. Yum!

Milo Kosong

I found out later that this particular shop was known as Restoran Weng Hing before they renovated last year) is rather popular and have large amount of followers. They even have a facebook account!

Apparently, the mini egg tart available here is a must have.

Just look at the queue.

Queuing for mini egg tarts

While i was enjoying my hor fun, the boyfriend asked me if i wanted egg tarts. I asked him whether it was any good here and he replied “I don’t know but look behind you… the queue so long means it must be darn good lar”.

Unfortunately, we were too full by the time we were done with our food (we don’t eat a lot in the morning). Next time, i’ll be sure to try the egg tarts!

Sek Yuen Restaurant

This year we celebrated dad’s birthday at Sek Yuen Restaurant which is located in Jalan Pudu.

We had a difficult time deciding where to go till we stumbled upon some blog review on this restaurant.

sek yuen restaurant
Sek Yuen Restaurant (with air-con)

Besides the positive food reviews and the wide variety of yummy food available here, i love the fact that Sek Yuen has a very quaint and vintage feel about it. Coincidently, dad had visited this restaurant before way back in his childhood days – in the 50′s! That kind of sealed the deal :)

Yeah once you stepped into Sek Yuen you are transported to the 50′s where even the cashier still uses abacus to bill you! Now tell me if that’s not old-school enough for you.

pei pa duck
Pei Pa Duck

The food here was quite good and some rather great but i had expected more spectacular stuff judging from the reviews i had read.

The Pei Pa Duck was one of the best i had. We call up the restaurant to order it in the morning because i heard that this dish is very popular among patrons. I would have also liked to try the Pat Pou Ngap (8 Treasure Duck) but we were told that we had to order it one day before so too bad.

The Pei Pa Duck’s skin was very, very crispy and the meat lean and sweet. I love that the duck did not have the musky taste that roast duck usually have. Very aromatic!

kau yuk
Kau Yuk

Also quite good was the Kau Yuk (Chinese Steamed Pork). The meat was really tender and the yam that is served with the pork was very good.

lo hon jai
Loh Hon Jai

We also had the Loh Hon Jai (Vegetarian) which was alright. Sis liked it but i find it rather bland tasting. Could use a little salt but one thing for sure is that there’s definitely no MSG in this shop. LOL.

pai guat wong
Pai Guat Wong

The Pai Guat Wong (Pork Rib) was rather disappointing though. It’s weird to have pork ribs without the ribs. Everything had been de-boned here. Plus i expected a more flavorful and piquant taste but it was just ok.

I wouldn’t say no to another visit just to try other signature dishes. The food here is very affordable with all the above dishes just totaling RM121.10. The old-school interior and the aunties waitress are just too adorable!

Ps:// It’s best to check out the dishes available at this restaurants from blogs or websites at firsthand. They do not have menus in the restaurant – the aunty serving you will orally drone the whole list of food for you too choose LOL.
