Mochi Fiesta!

The sis came back from another stop in Japan which means i am featuring something all the way from the land of the rising sun this time.

What’s better is today’s post is all about one of my favorite snacks, mochi!

Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made of glutinous rice pounded into paste and molded into shape. There are several types of mochi but here i am introducing 3 types of daifuku which is a soft round mochi stuffed with sweet filling the most common being the red bean paste.

First is the Watermelon (suika) Mochi.

Ok, i don’t think this is a mochi but i have no idea what to call this Japanese brand snack so i’m grouping it together with the rest of them. LOL.

But oh, it’s the cutest thing.

It has watermelon green prints and shaped like a flattened watermelon. Almost too cute to be eaten!

The outer layer’s texture is like cake/brownies with purple jam-like fillings in the middle.

The fillings is of course watermelon flavored which i find kind of weird. Overall, it’s not bad but i didn’t like it because it was rather too sweet.

Too bad.

Next up is the Ichigo (strawberry) Milk Mochi.

But mind you this mochi does not contain a whole strawberry inside which i much prefer… although the packaging suggest otherwise.

Instead, nestled within the box are 10 pieces of pinkish rice balls and within the rice balls are white cream textured milk fillings.

Although there’s no strawberry inside the mochi, the mochi’s skin are strawberry flavored. The mochi is sweet and milky at the same time. Almost like having strawberry ice cream.

I liked it but preferred a less sweet version of it.

And finally, here comes the Maccha (green tea) Chocolate Daifuku (mochi). This in fact is my favorite of all.

This box contains i think around 35 pieces of green tea mochi (i’m not sure coz i forgot to count :P ).

I love this maccha flavored mochi because it’s not too sweet and has a milky taste to it similar to the strawberry mochi.

I have  no idea why it says “maccha chocolate” on the packaging because i don’t see any chocolate anywhere. Within the green tea flavored mochi is some white milk cream. The texture of this mochi is very soft and definitely smoother than the other 2 type of mochi mentioned earlier on.

Yum!

De Pastry Chef

Japan lost to Paraguay! What a waste, despite being a football dummie i was rooting for our Asian team. But Japan is out although i must commend them on a well played game. It was a tough fight.

I guess a lot of us was really looking forward to the match because all the mamak stalls and cafes at Bandar Menjalara were really packed. Even De Pastry Chef was crowded with people watching the game.

De Pastry Chef

Anyway, the boyfriend was craving for cakes after i fed him with a piece of really delicious and moist chocolate cake during dinner. LOL. It was late and the only bakery shop nearby that’s still open was the De Pastry Shop which only closes at midnight.

Packaging

The selection of dessert and pastries were plenty. All the cakes looks really good and average at the price of RM6-RM7.

The boyfriend bought himself a piece of Hungaria Walnut cake for RM7. I was torn between the blackforest cake or the blueberry cheese cake but in the end decided not to have any LOL.

Hungaria Walnut

The Hungaria Walnut was rather good although i didn’t liked the cream on top which taste too eggy and runny (like King’s cake)… if you know what i mean. I liked that the cake was moist and not overly sweet or too over-whelming. It has a slight coffee taste to it with of course chopped pieces of walnut for crunchiness.

I’ve yet to try the other food available here (sandwiches, pasta, soup) at pretty affordable price. Maybe some other time.

Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme came to Malaysia this year. It was a few months back i think and everyone was extremely excited. This particular doughnut franchise is very popular it seems, the only chance to get a taste is when you’re travelling overseas – nearest in Indonesia or Philippine.

Yeah, i know i’m a little outdated for i don’t go to Bukit Bintang area too often and the only Krispy Kreme outlet is at Berjaya Times Square. However, friends and family had already tried the doughnuts and surprise, surprise, they didn’t like it at all. I recall a lot of people was raving about how delicious the doughnuts were before it came to Malaysia.

Cappuccino Kreme and Hershey’s Dark Chocolate

Oh well, last weekend we were at Jalan Imbi for some business so we decided to try Krispy Kreme for ourselves. We sat down with the Cappuccino Kreme and Hershey’s Dark Chocolate on the tray and took a bite.

Both of us didn’t like it. After the first bite we were reluctant to finish the doughnuts. The dough was rough and a little dry while the frosting on top was so darn sweet it almost caused me toothache :( . The cappuccino cream inside was too sweet too. As for the pieces of dark chocolate on top of Hershey’s Dark Chocolate flavor didn’t exactly go well with the doughnut. It was again too sweet and weird. Fortunately we had enough sense not to buy a whole dozen.

Has Krispy Kreme gone wrong or is it just the Malaysian franchise? I bet it’s the later.

Kompiang and Mou Mou from Sitiawan, Perak

Filed Under (Cakes and Pastries, Food in Malaysia, Food in Perak, Food in Sitiawan, Fuzhou Cuisine, Non Halal) by kuanfoodfetish on 22-01-2009

When it comes to Sitiawan, locals would always recommend a few delicacies you must try.

1) Red Wine Mee Sua
2) Kompiang
3) Mou mou
4) Loh Mee
5) Fish Maw
6) Fuzhou Fishball
7) Cendol

Kompiang/Kongpiang/Kompyang hails from Hockchiew or Fuzhou provinces in Malaysia. It is made of lard, onions, salt and flour with either onion or minced meat (usually pork meat) in-between the biscuit which is then slapped onto the sides of a homemade traditional Chinese oven. It will stick at the side of the oven while it is baked for approximately 15 minutes.

Come and get it!

It was my first time in Sitiawan, Perak. Mr. Bf said that it’s a ‘must-try’ and so we went out on a Saturday afternoon in search of the famous biscuit. His grandma recommended a shop that according to them has the most yummy kompiang in town. If i’m not mistaken it’s called Sin Lay or something like that, you will be able to find it easily since it’s a small town. Turn in before the Orange Cake House.

Chinese oven

The shop was very old and very warm because of the oven. Very old school! One thing for sure is that once you reach the shop, you could smell the strong, enticing aroma of kompiang.

I couldn’t wait to take a bite!

Fresh from the oven

I don’t read Chinese and the grandma paid RM23 for 30 pieces of kompiang but i guess different stuffing and sizes of the biscuit will have different price ranging from RM1.00 – RM2.00

Kompiang!

Kompiang should definitely be eaten right off the oven while it’s still hot, else it will be a little hard to chew. You could buy it from the shop but if you intend to purchase more, you would have to place order one day before. People from all over Malaysia comes for the kompiang so they need a little time to prepare :) .

As for Mou Mou , it’s a multi-layered pau with ground peanuts and sugar. The pau skin is softer than the usual pau and taste a little sweet. Yummy!

5 slices cost RM4.00

I have no idea why it’s called Mou Mou but i just think the name is adorable.

The Worst Tiramisu Cake

Though i love the sandwiches, buns and especially the mini chocolate mouse cake from Sun Moulin, this has got to be the worst tiramisu cake ever. I dislike it even more than their green tea cake!

Sun Moulin

The tiramisu was too dry and when i took a bite the cake/brownies layer was all over the place. Plus the cheese layer was yucky! I felt like i was eating lard -_-”.

To say we paid RM67 for this… sad.
