Every year i dread the first day of CNY because it’s a family tradition to be vegans for a day (i love my meat too much). More than often the vegetarian restaurants are extremely pack so the service can get really poor. Usually the food at other restaurants is expensive and the food gluten-laden too.
This year we finally had some good vegetarian food for a change!
PJ a rather far place to venture for vegetarian but it was a good choice.
Nanking Court Vegetarian Restaurant (南京阁素饭店) is part of the Ahimsa Group of vegetarian restaurant with halal certificate. The restaurant is rather old since it’s been around quite long but it’s spacious and service is alright. There’s big round tables on the inside area which is usually already been reserved on CNY so it’s a good idea to call and book in advance. Else there are also small wooden tables near the entrance.
My only lament is the floor is strewn with used tissue papers by previous customers and the staff did not clean it up. Perhaps they are too busy since it’s the festive season; the employees were running around hectically attending to customers.
For CNY, there are special sets available depending on pax and price. The RM278 set cater for 7 persons which include a vegetarian yee sang, 5 vegetarian dishes and a dessert. The portion is not too big but just right.
Loved the yee sang. Seriously one of the better yee sang we had this year.
There’s also the Vegetarian Cod Fish (comes in 2) served with finely chopped pickled ginger and sweet sauce. It was appetizing and delicious. The chopped ginger gave it a tangy taste.
Shark fin here was great as well. Smooth and not overly salty as with most vegetarian restaurant.
I forgot what this this is called but it’s supposed to be imitation braised pork. I’m impressed because the texture and taste is definitely similar with real thing. Yums!
You know what; one of the dishes that i detest at vegetarian restaurant is the mushroom. Personally i feel that they always make it too starchy and i can always detect hint of MSG in it.
The Chinese Mushroom with Sea Cucumber at Nanking was absolutely rich and juicy. No MSG here.
One of my favorite is the Spring Roll. Deep fried and wrapped in seaweed skin which gave it a crispy bite, it was delicious.
By the time the Lotus Leaf Rice arrived, we were stuffed. Nonetheless, we did try a few spoon before we ‘tapau’ and it was not bad.
Lunch ended with Pumpkin Soup Dessert which was silky and rich. This i think is an acquired taste because not everyone likes pumpkin but it’s two thumbs up from me.
