I still can recall the first time i had Sang Har Mee (Prawn Noodle) at Keong Kee. I was really impressed with the size and the freshness of the prawn and was absolutely loving the gravy. And it has been a really long while since we’ve last visited the restaurant so for Mom’s birthday we decided to dine at Keong Kee again.
The place was buzzing with patrons even though it was a rainy Saturday night so you could only guess how popular the food are here.
With a budget of RM400++ the Master Chef and his young son apprentice managed to whip up a lavish menu.
First was the signature Prawn Noodle. The four prawns, each as big as my palm were humongous. The young chef informed us they only purchase fresh prawns imported from India which they will hand-pick every morning. Once you sink your teeth into its crunchy body, it is obvious that the prawns are really fresh. The thick, rich gravy and crispy noodles is a good complement to the dish. Delish!
Customers could also choose to have the dish ala spicy or with soft noodles. Just let the young chef or the lady boss knows your preference.
The Shunde Traditional Fish Paste with Zucchini is something special. For one it doesn’t exactly taste like fish at all. The presentation and the texture is like soft braised tofu instead of fish. I detected a mild taste of Shaoxing wine which enhances the taste of the fish. The dish is slightly salty but good although having too much (oh gluttony!) made me a little nauseous.
The Prosperity Fried Rice was simply scrumptious. Just the look of the dish was enough to wet my appetite. Oh, i’m actually craving for this now because it was that good!
Aptly named, the fried rice is definitely ‘prosperous’ with ingredients such as scallop, shrimp, dried shrimp, prawn paste and the delicious dried prawn roe. Only the finest, fragrant rice is used. Sure enough the dish is fragrant, flavorful and robust. The tiny prawn roe is really good and adds to the bite. Great!
I think i’ve already mentioned on my first post about how good the green vegetable here is.
The vegetable of the day was fresh and crunchy. Yums!
Continuing with my gushing for food at Keong Kee, i’m moving on to the Steamed River Patin.
I think you can’t go wrong with seafood at this restaurant. They have the freshest fish around. The steamed fish was delicious and absolutely big. Coming from a family that loves steamed fish, we never had left-over because we would have polished the plate in no time. However, we had to paced ourselves here since the fish is so good but yet so big. LOL.
The white flesh is springy and sweet. The sauce light and appetizing.
When the last dish arrived we were so stuffed we couldn’t eat anymore. Before ‘ta pao’ the Pork Ribs to go, we sampled a small bite of the pork anyways since the presentation was nice. The pork was succulent and tender – very easy to chew; drenched in what the young chef called ‘special master recipe steak sauce’ making it slightly sweet to the taste. I find it a bit too sweet to my liking but overall still good.
Besides their noodles which working people flock to sample during office lunch breaks, there are dishes that aren’t in the menu… in fact i’m not too sure if they have a physical menu at all LOL but if in doubt you could ask the staff for what is available. Else you could actually let the staff know your budget (preferably at least a day before so they could scour the market for fresh produce and seafood) and they will put on their creative caps. You’ll be surprise at what luxurious meal you could get for an affordable price.
