Oh, another new eatery at Bandar Menjalara! Restaurants are springing up like mushrooms after the rain at this area in Kepong.
That’s good news to lazy people like me especially in current rainy season, who prefer to have their meals nearby. It’s a bonus too because it’s a dim sum place and god knows how imma love dim sum.
The spanking new dim sum place is just across the street from Menara Menjalara. It’s hard to miss with the huge, bright maroon sign board saying “Restoran Yat Dim Sum Yi” (一點心意) which translates to “a small token”. How appropriate.
It is not our ordinary dim sum place either; the interior is modern with nice grey floor tiles, maroon painted walls, marble/wooden tables and chairs. It is spacious and hygienically clean.
Compared to the common dim sum shop with tissue strewn all over the floor and white bathroom tiles, this is a very comfortable place to enjoy the newspaper while sipping tea and sampling small dishes in the morning (well anytime of the day since the shops operates from morning till evening).
But hey to be fair this shop is relatively new so it is an unfair comparison.
The dim sum here is good with a wide unique range of small food items to choose from. Apart from the conventional dim sum such as siu mai, har gao, egg tart, taro dumpling, here they have more extensive options. Very Hong Kong style!
We’ve ordered only just a few baskets to sample since there were just the two of us.
I have mix feelings about the taro dumpling (yam dumpling). On one hand it is perfectly deep fried till golden and absolutely not greasy. The texture is perfectly crunchy! On the other hand it was too heavy on the yam; i could barely taste the sweet pork fillings within.
The boyfriend vouched for the steamed spare ribs (pai guat) with black bean sauce. It was fresh and had a nice sweet taste to it. Not my all time favorite in any dim sum restaurant but here at Yat Dim Sum Yi i made an exception.
The many types of steam dumplings are my favorite. The dumpling skin is absolutely smooth and the delicious fillings in generous portion.
It’s funny because i get the satisfactory feeling that everything i consumed here are healthy and good for me. The dim sum here is light, not greasy at all and it didn’t taste starchy or made me too full after only the first third dish.
However, the pork fillings in the dim sum here is not as ‘heavy tasting’ compared to other dim sum place. It lacks in the taste department although i can’t really describe what it is. Perhaps i’m just too used to MSG-laden dim sum LOL!
I’m a little disappointed with the Xiao Long Bao though. At RM6.00, the miniature buns no doubt were plump and solidly filled with soup. However, the skin tasted a slightly floury and the fillings were just mediocre.
The Gun Tong Gao (灌汤饺) which literally translates to “Soaking Soup Dumpling” was superb. It’s some kind of a huge seafood dumpling immersed in soup. Here the dumpling is filled with mushroom, dried scallop and what i’m sure is fish maw among other ingredients.
The soup was clear and sweet. We absolutely loved the fish maw which gives it a crunchy bite. You know, cooking fish maw is very tricky; it has to be cleaned thoroughly and delicately prepared to remove the ‘fishy’ taste. I’m glad the fish maw is good here.
I was a Gun Tong Gao virgin before this so there is no way i could compare but the dumpling was just delicious. Costing RM8.00 a bowl (an average price i think because i heard the dumpling with shark fin is around RM12 above elsewhere), it’s a definitely a must-have.
Also RM8.00 is the Chee Cheong Fun. We had the char siew (barbecued pork) type but it was just average. The noodle is floury and not as smooth as i would have liked. Overall, not bad but i’ve had better.
It’s no surprise that the dim sum here is rather pricey given that the array of dim sum here is pretty extensive and the quality good. Our breakfast for 2 person came up to RM44.65 inclusive of 5% service charge.
Prices range from RM3.80 (XS), RM4.50 (S), RM5.00 (M) and so on ending at RM10.00 (SP). I’m not sure how they rate the dishes but most of the dumplings and dim sum i had cost around RM5.00 and i guess SP stands for ‘Special’.
They do not serve ‘leong sui’ which is annoying because i can’t drink any type of tea (stomach problem) for the time being. What they have is Chinese tea and plain sky juice which they will bill you RM0.50 a glass LOL.
I shall think i will visit the place again soon, the plate of egg tarts, lotus leaf rice and ‘sou’ (pastry) on the next table looked really, really tempting.
