Our family food excursion brought us to Bar-B-Q Plaza at Jusco Metro Prima, Kepong. Not my first time visiting Bar-B-Q Plaza, but my first at Metro Prima. In fact this new outlet had only been operating for less than 3 months, hence the big crowd in the restaurant and the long queue at the entrance.
The first time i dined at the Mongolian-Japanese style barbecue restaurant was at 1 Utama. I recall it being a cold, rainy night, the place was deserted, the ventilation was good and it was a perfect night for steamboat and barbecue thus i loved it.
At Metro Prima, the restaurant is slightly cramped – not as spacious as i would like since it is more of a family dining. It was hectic with employees running about everywhere. The ventilation isn’t very efficient either because we were sweating profusely halfway through our food.
We had the Family Mixed Set which consists of slices of unmarinated bacon, pork and beef, fish balls, fish noodles, prawns, lettuce and cabbage. We also ordered an additional dish of enoki mushroom.
There is a technique to preparing the food. First grease the hot plate with the cubes of lard provided. This is to make sure that the meat would not stick to the hot plate when barbecued. Clear chicken broth is poured into the side. Add the cabbage and other vegetables into the broth and let it simmer. Grill the meat on the hot plate until brown then it is ready to be eaten. The broth will eventually become sweeter as you add more vegetable and when the sweet juices from the grilled meat drained into the broth.
The ingredients were nothing great but meats were admittedly fresh and after they are grilled and dipped into the fantastic sauce concoction they were delicious and very appetizing. I think Bar-B-Q Plaza would be just a mediocre hot plate restaurant if not for the brown home-made vegetable condiment. Mix it with chopped garlic, bird eye chili and lime, the sauce is a perfect complement to the barbecued meat.
Also tasty is the garlic fried rice. The garlic infused rice is very fragrant. What i always do is to drizzle a little bit of the brown sauce into the rice and it is sublime.
Not a bad place for a family outing or with a group of friends. But i definitely prefer the outlet in 1 Utama compared to this. The place is usually crowded so the staffs are prone to make mistake (like forget out drinks order!).
