There are many positive reviews about Sheng Gang Wan Seafood Restaurant in Guangzhou. Apparently it is one of the best places to enjoy seafood in Guangzhou. Located at Zhu Lan Lu at Huangsha; parked right in the middle of the seafood market, its good reputation is of no surprise.
You have the choice of ordering direct from the menu or more often customers prefer to select the best live seafood fresh from the tank at the below seafood market. The restaurant staff will be happy to take them into the kitchen and turn them into succulent mouthwatering, seafood galore.
Seafood aside, the restaurant gained its popularity from its strategic location on the top floor overlooking the Pearl River. There are 2 separate sections within the restaurant; indoor dining and the outdoor rooftop dining. Many patrons prefer the outdoor section which gives them a great view while enjoying their meal (especially in the evening).
As for the food, both the preparation and the presentation were good. The seafood were mostly steamed or cooked with just a few ingredients so not to mask the subtle but sweet taste of seafood.
I especially enjoyed the stir-fried bamboo clams with red/green capsicum and stalks of lemon grass which adds to the fragrance. Very tender yet springy. Thumbs up!
Also good, are the huge clams. I forgot which type they were (they looks like scallop shells but definitely not scallops) but they were huge, very sweet and juicy. I think by just steaming the clams with chopped spring onion and garlic, it preserved the natural taste of the clams while enhances the sweetness of the seafood.
We had 2 different style of cooking for abalone.
First was simple steamed abalone served spring onion and with soy sauce and a dribble of hot oil. Not a fan of abalone because personally i think abalone is tasteless on its own. But this dish wasn’t bad.
The other dish was abalone with sweet sauce. I prefer this one because the sauce is thick and it actually coats the abalone well giving it a sweet and juicy bite.
The only disappointment was the plate of green vegetable. What i have experienced in Guangzhou eateries so far is that they serve stalks of vegetables without cutting it into smaller bite size. The result – we had to chew at the vegetable and it’s not a pleasant sight because the vege is rather oily and wet so the sauce dribbles down your chin.
Nevertheless, this seafood place is very affordable. In fact the price was so reasonable we were rather surprised when we received the bill. There is no way you could have 2 dish of abalone in addition to other seafood dishes for just RMB300++ or RM150++.
