Anyone here loves dim sum as much as i do? Have you tried the Foh San Dim Sum Restaurant in Ipoh? This is my first!
On the eve of my sister’s wedding reception, we decided to stop at Ipoh for breakfast before heading to Sungai Petani where the reception is to be held. And what’s good for breakfast in Ipoh? Dim sum of course!
Dad naturally suggested Foh San restaurant. All of us have not been to this restaurant before but according to dad they have good dim sum at very reasonable price.
Unfortunately, most of us are not familiar with Ipoh and of all time dad’s memory decided to fail us then. After several wrong turnings due to outdated GPS (-_-”), we finally reached the new outlet at Jalan Leong Sing Nam.
Too bad because i was actually looking forward to visiting the old outlet. Well, that’s before i found out that the supposingly old outlet is not exactly vintage looking albeit located at an old building. Plus i heard it’s much more crowded there.
Anyways, the new Foh San outlet is behind Maybank. It’s hard to miss since it’s a big 2 storey restaurant with a big signboard (in Chinese).
We reached the restaurant at around 10.30am and the place was really crowded. Seeing the ground floor was already full, we went up to the floor above. The crowd must have dispersed since it’s already late morning so there were still a few vacant tables there.
I’m not sure what is the business hours of this place but i heard people are already here by 7am and it should be open for business till late noon – closes around 2pm.
The restaurant is spacious albeit crowded with customers. I like the upper level because of its open verandah which gives the restaurant adequate sunshine. It’s very Hongkie style if you ask me.
As for the dim sum, you have to order the dim sum first hand so the staff could heat them up in the kitchen before they are sent to your table. You will get a piece of paper which is listed varieties of dim sum that you can choose and there are also staffs pushing carts loaded with the dry type of dim sum such as egg tarts and yam puffs.
Dim sum heated up in traditional stacked bamboo steamers. After they are heated, the staff will bring it over to your table still in the steamers.
We ordered quite a lot. I was afraid my tummy would burst but the dim sum keep coming!
The dim sum at Foh San is delicious and authentic. Everything was fresh. There’s not a lot to choose from but still it was satisfying.
I especially liked the stir-fried lo bak gou (radish cake) and the lo mai gai (glutinous rice). Compared to those in KL, they are less greasy and more fragrant. The lo mai gai was soft and tempting. I also loved the taro/yam puff; it’s a lot better than those selling at other restaurants.
Oh, we tried the famous char siew pau (buns are filled with barbecue-flavored cha siu pork). It was ok… i didn’t like it much. It’s definitely very different compared to other char siew pau that i had but in a weird way.
The bill came up to only RM96.60. That’s like 26 dishes inclusive of Chinese tea for the 7 of us. I can’t believe how cheap is was! The price is even after a 5% government tax fees. Awesome!
