Aside from babi guling, Ayam Bakar Taliwang (grilled spicy chicken) is one of the most memorable dish we had in Bali. Ayam Taliwang is the the local favorite of Lombok, Indonesia but it’s available at most warung or stalls all over Bali.
We chanced upon Rumah Makan As Sidiq on our way to Ulun Danu Bratan Temple in the area of Bedugul. Bedugul is the central highlands of Bali overseeing the volcano crater lake and botanical gardens. It’s almost like going up Cameron Highlands as it was chilly and fresh up there.
Along the road uphill there are a few eateries but mostly serving western food to cater for tourists. Our guide, Yande, knew we wanted to try something local so he ushered us into Rumah Makan As Sidiq, a halal eatery serving Indonesion food.
He made also made the order for us because we we scratching our head when we saw the menu. I have no idea what was all the dish on the list haha.
Each of us had a Ayam Pelecing (Rp23,00/RM8.40 each) and a Pelecing Kangkung (Rp5,000/RM1.80 each).
Thanks to Yande, we had the chance to try this absolutely awesome dish!
Ayam Pelecing is spicy grilled chicken. The restaurant uses ayam kampung (village chicken) which is leaner and sweeter in taste. Although the ayam kampung is less tender, when marinated with pelecing then grilled, it gives it a very piquant and aromatic flavor.
Pelecing by the way is some kind of sambal made from shrimp paste, lime juice and bird chilies. It’s extremely hot and spicy! It comes with a small plate of chili sauce too which was amazingly hot as well.
A word of warning though the Ayam Pelecing is really hot and will burn your tongue and leave you with “sausage” lips but it’s absolutely delicious!
The also had the Kangkung Pelecing (spicy water spinach). If we didn’t know better, we would have thought Yande were trying to kill us with overdose of chilies!
This dish is also very spicy because once again smothered with the spicy pelecing. I could really do without this dish actually. I find that the vegetable in Indonesia have a rather raw taste but others seemed ok with it.
