I first heard about Snowflake from facebook. I saw friends posting photos of mouth watering desserts on their photo album and i wondered where is this new outlet. They told me it’s in Pavilion and i scratched my head because i’ve been to Pavilion so many times but i’ve never bumped into this shop before.

It was my lucky day when Pipu suggested we head on to Pavilion for the popular Taiwanese dessert after a hot steamboat session at Xiao Fei Yang.

In turns out that Snowflake is fairly easy to locate. It’s on level 4 directly opposite the Padini Concept Store – it figures because i rarely go to Padini LOL.

The outlet’s design is simple yet modern. They don’t have alot of tables so you’ll have to wait your turn because the place is rather streaming with customers most of the time.

Snowflake also have a very cute and unique system for placing order. It’s definitely the first i’ve seen.

They have a gadget called the “Beeping UFO” which is given to you (with the corresponding table number of course) when you order at the counter. The device will light up and vibrate to indicate that your order is ready to be picked up at the counter. Which is what the UFO tagline “This allow you to chillout while we make your order” is all about.

Cute, no?

tau fu fa with peanut soup
Tau Fu Fa with Peanut Soup

We ordered 3 bowls of different dessert to share. It’s a good idea seeing the bowl was rather big and the portion generous.

We didn’t order their best seller “Grass Jelly with Iced Grass Jelly and Taro balls”. I have no idea because i wasn’t paying attention. LOL.

We ordered the Tau Fu Fa with peanut soup which was just alright. It was served warm. I had my doubts but surprisingly tau fu fa paired with peanut soup wasn’t bad at all although the tau fu fa wasn’t very smooth.

Red Bean with Black Pearl and Taro

My fav was the Red Bean with Black Pearls. There ice is thinly shaved and it came with a small cup of creamer to add flavor. There’s 2 pieces of Taro balls (yam) too which was splendid. the taro is exceptionally delicious, very soft and sweet while the dessert on the whole was yummy and refreshing.

Two thumbs up!

Another dessert we tried was the Green Bean with Black Pearl and Barley. It was good too and the green bean was really soft. Although not as yummy as the red bean option, this dessert is rather nice. Just add the creamer if you find it a tad too dry.

For RM5++ a bowl it was worth it.

Restoran Tangkak Beef Noodles

While waiting for my dermatologist and feeling slightly peckish, we had a stroll around Jalan Imbi. There weren’t much choices for food since it’s already 4pm. That’s when we spotted a small but clean shop opposite Overseas Restaurant.

I had not suspected the popularity of Restoran Tangkak Beef Noodles till i was seated and saw the many newspaper clippings plastered on the wall. Apparently it’s a branch of the very famous Kuang fei beef noodles with branches in Kluang and Malacca.

beef noodle

However, the beef noodle in this particular outlet is really not my cup of tea.

The boyfriend ordered the mix beef selection (with stomach and tendons) with hor fun while i had the normal one with yee mee.

The noodles came within few minutes full to the rim with big chunks of beef. The beef was not tender at all, instead it’s very hard to chew. I really had a hard time eating eat and the chunks being so big didn’t help at all. The broth was alright though even though not impressive.

Beef Noodle (Medium) – RM7.90
Beef Noddle with tendon and stomach (Medium) 0 RM7.90
Coke – RM2.50
Mineral water – RM2.00

Total: RM20.30

Xiao Fei Yang Steamboat

Pipu had recommended this place for our small new year reunion. Well, she’s officially our group’s food hunter now. Haha.

She’s been to Xiao Fei Yang (Small Fat Goat) restaurant on her birthday and according to her it is something worth trying.

sterilized cutlery set

Xiao Fei Yang offer’s Mongolian style steamboat which differs from the normal steamboat in the soup/broth base. Whereby normal steamboat offers herbal chicken broth and tom yam broth, Xiao Fei Yang offers Herbal Chicken Soup and Peppercorn Seed Soup (Mah Lat = Super Spicy).

For those who loves spicy food, the peppercorn seed soup is definitely your choice. It’s quite spicy but i suspect they toned it down to accommodate our local flavor. Otherwise, it’s really flavorful and good.

cutlery cleansing

One thing i must mention about this restaurant is the cleanliness and service. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. They speak Mandarin which i’m useless is but fortunately i’m the only banana in the group.

The shop is super clean and hygienic – the cutlery (inclusive of bowls and plates) are all sent to a disinfection centre where they are washed and sterilized. Don’t believe it? Just look at the photo i took. The cutlery are still in sealed plastics!

Not so good for the environment though…

mah lat steamboat

The pot of broth is quite a sight especially the spicy section where it’s really red with mixtures of dried chilies, garlic and pepper seed.

Place on the table is 3 types of sauces - chilli, fermented bean curd and also what i think is fermented black been paste. I definitely prefer the black bean paste.

sacues

It’s pretty difficult to make up our mind on the order because the restaurant have extensive list of ingredients on the list which includes their signature goat meat.

Pipu then swap out her trusty camera phone and showed the staff the photos she had taken from her last visit! LOL. It was so funny but we did manage to get what we wanted.

steamboat ingredients

We ordered a total of 12 types of steamboat ingredients such as fishball, mushroom and veges.

Also if you are there you have to order their slice meat. We chose pork and their signature goat’s meat.

pork slice

Both meat is tender and delicious. I can’t get enough of the goat’s meat, it was very tasty.

mutton slice

The bill came up to RM138++ for the 6 of us. I find it rather affordable and reasonable for their fresh ingredients. Definitely will visit again, maybe during CNY with the family.

Restoran Lan Je

Filed Under (Chinese Cuisine, Food in Kota Damansara, Food in Malaysia, Food in Selangor, Non Halal) by kuanfoodfetish on 02-01-2010

I swear this is the last post with borrowed pictures if i can help it. Really! Anyone wants to sponsor me an Aino? :P .

So, anyways how was your new year celebration? I spent it at home chomping on McD while watching the far away fireworks over the balcony LOL. I hope it was a great one for everyone and that 2010 will bring new hope and new “makan” adventures for all the foodies out there.

Right now i’m still trying to find time to clear up my 2009 folders. I think i have a few more last year’s reviews yet to be completed. Let’s get rid of the old (shoo!) and welcome the new (lai lai!). Here goes.

Have you heard of the very famous Lan Je’s Steamed Tilapia Fish from Rawang? Of course you have. It’s quite famous after all right? Well it’s available in Kota Damansara now. I have no idea when this particular branch opened (i guess it’s early 2009) but a friend of the boyfriend visited the restaurant and had absolutely positive comments about the steamed fish.

We drove there one weekend to see for ourselves. We headed out a little bit late and i was worried we couldn’t get a table as i heard the place could get really crowded. We were there at about 8pm and already at the entrance were throngs of people trying to get a table!

Fortunately, there were only 4 of us and the staff quickly had us seated at the small table. I must say that the service here is really good and the staff gets the traffic flowing. However, we had to wait almost an hour for our food to arrive but it was expected.

The tilapia fish here is not very big, one fish could adequately be shared between 2 person or less. There is only one style of cooking for the fish but you can either have it in non-spicy, spicy or extra spicy flavor. It actually tastes the same – the difference is only with the amount of chili padi.

I find the steamed tilapia smooth and extremely fresh. It was pretty good although not really special as people made it out to be. It’s rather like my mom’s cooking LOL. Which is why mom was rather disappointed at the dish. Not because it wasn’t good but because there’s nothing super special about the dish.

“Just normal steamed tilapia with ginger only wat. But i admit it’s very fresh lar…”, that’s exactly what she said to me. :P .

Other than the fish, the other dishes in the house are not as popular since it’s just mediocre but pricey.

We paid and they don’t offer a receipt if you don’t ask. So, after paying we decided to get the breakdown of the cost and they gave us the receipt. I’ve been told that the fish cost RM14 – RM18 according to size. We ordered 2 medium tilapia which cost us RM37.00! That’s like RM18.50 each for a medium fish. So cheated! Hmmm… always ask for a receipt people!

Medium tilapia fish – RM37.00
Bu er tea – RM4.00
Rice x 5 – RM6.00
Ku Lou Chicken – RM12.00
Vege – RM9.00
