Khuntai Restaurant is a Thai restaurant located at Petaling Jaya which is quite popular among foodies. Just the day before we visited the restaurant, it was featured in the newspaper. The place is especially popular for it’s tom yum and steam fish. I know how good Thai steam fish is being tasted one of the best lemon steam fish in Bangkok early this year, i had high expectations.
Khuntai doesn’t look much, just a small and old building in front of a public parking lot. When the patrons pours in, tents and tables are set on the corridors. But what the restaurant lack in space and looks, it makes up with its excellent service.
I must admit that i was surprised at how fluent the foreign staff were in English. All the staff were polite and super friendly – chit chatting with all the patrons making sure they were comfortable. Don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations too as the employees are very helpful.
Despite being told that the place would be packed, only one table was occupied when we arrive. I guess we were early and people prefer Thai food for dinner instead of lunch LOL. More patrons came in after 12pm but it was still manageable.
As for the food, i would say i am a little disappointed. I expected better after reading the positive reviews about this restaurant. I found the food just mediocre.
The seafood tom yam had a lingering “belacan” taste and instead of being “throat-piercing” spicy (which is how we like it), it was just really sour. The ingredients on the other hand was fresh so it was ok.
We ordered the Thai styled steamed fish. Is it different from the Thai lemon steamed fish? I not too sure.
Again the “siakap” fish is extremely fresh and tasted good. The soup was very salty. Too salty actually. Even though the staff offers a soup refill, we barely touched the soup.
The vege (“Kai Lan”) with oyster sauce is the worst. The vege was so very bitter.
.
I don’t think i’m going for a next visit.
