Din Tai Fung in The Gardens had been around for quite sometime now. Everyone who had been there have positive comments about it especially about the scrumptious signature Xiao Long Bao but somehow i never attempted for a visit. Perhaps i had my doubts, some very popular restaurants doesn’t really live up to its name.

Last weekend however, curiosity finally got the better of me. After a successful shopping trip at Zara, we had a late dinner at Din Tai Fung. It was very well too that the place isn’t as crowded as usual at this late hour.

The service was good, staff polite and efficiently fast. But it did bother me that the eatery was so noisy that we had to shout at each other to be heard and the tables are set very near to the next. It’s very typical Taiwanese style. LOL.

Boyfriend suggested that we order for ala carte dishes with rice instead of noodles so we could try more dishes.

The first dish that came was the Vegetable and Pork Wantan in Superior Broth. I think there were 8 pieces in all, i can’t recall exactly. The big wantan with “kao choi” were pretty good, very heavy taste of vege and the broth really light and clear.

I’ll never regret getting their Xiao Long Bao either. It was superb, one of the best i’ve tasted. The Xiao Long Bao’s texture and shape was perfectly done with plenty of delicious soup in each of the small bao.

The platter of 6 is very reasonably priced too, at only RM9.80. Super deal there. Two thumbs up!

My favorite of the day i must say would be the Fried French Bean with Pork. I loved that they used french bean instead of long bean for this dish. French bean makes it extra crunchy.

This dish is especially fragrant because of the pork and dried shrimp. I couldn’t get enough!

Another dish we had was the “San Bei Ji” which is marinated chicken cooked in basil leaves. It’s very popular in Taiwan.

I’m quite sure there’s rice wine involved since i could obviously make out the taste. The rice wine makes it even more delectable. Plus the chicken absorbed the sauces like sponge making it tasty inside out.

It was a pleasant dinner at Din Tai Fung. Food was great and i was pleasantly surprised that the price is not really pricey for such a popular and international restaurant. Definitely wil go for another visit soon. :)

Vegetable Pork Wantan in Superior Broth – RM10.00
Xiao Long Bao – RM9.80
Basil Chicken (San Bei Ji) – RM 16.80
Fried French Bean with Pork – RM16.00
Rice x 2 – RM4.00
Hot tea x 2 – RM4.00
Wet towel x 2 – RM2.00

Total: RM72.00 (RM62.60 + RM6.26 service + RM3.13 tax)

Ko Hyang Korean Country Delights

The mall was so crowded on the Raya weekend no doubt because everyone taught there won’t be any traffic jam around town. Most people took the opportunity to shop and eat out. Mid Valley and the Gardens was were crowded.

When dinner time comes it was difficult to get a table at eateries or restaurants without first joining the long queue. It was lucky that we spotted an unoccupied table at Ko Hyang, a Korean food kiosk at the Gardens Ground Floor.

The aroma of kimchi and bulgogi was so tantalizing too :) .

I couldn’t wait to place order.

The menu is rather limited but it is expected since it’s only a small kiosk. There are noodles, Korean soup/stew, beef, bimbibap, Korean pancakes and rice cakes. The soup and other assorted dishes are served with brown rice and side dishes.

The portion isn’t as big as what most Korean restaurants would serve. This suits me fine because i have a hard time finishing up Korean food anyways – the portion is so big!

Ko Hyang’s food is decent and i especially liked the Kimchi pancake. The soups are quite good too, the kimchi jikye was very sour! Yummy!

sundu bujikye
Sundu Bujikye

Sundu Bujikye is good too. It looks similar to the kimchi kijye, we were concerned that they gave us the wrong order. The staff pointed out to us politely that the sundu bujikye is rather spicy and has seafood (prawn and clams) and more taufu while the kimchi jikye is with kimchi of course so it’s really sour.

I was disappointed with Bulgogi Bokem not because it tasted bad (it was rather good and the beef was very tender) but because it doesn’t look anything like the picture in the menu. Haha. Plus i think they ran out of glass noodle. If i’m not mistaken this dish is supposed to have glass noodles, my fav.

The service here is excellent. The staff very friendly and extremely polite plus they speak fluent English.

If you are lucky you will get served by the young and pretty Korean lady boss herself :P .

Kimchi Jikye – RM14.90
Sundu Bu Jikye – RM14.90
Bulgogi Bokem – RM16.90
Kimchi Pancake – RM9.50
Green Tea x 2 – RM6.00
Ice Lemon Tea – RM3.30

Total: RM68.78 (RM65.50 – RM3.28 service)

Pan Mee and Wild Boar meat

There’s a row of hawker stalls right opposite Shaw Parade at Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah which i recently found out offer nice pan mee for an affordable price.

For only RM25.80 we got 6 bowls of pan mee (small) with eggs, and 2 small dish of snacks – wild boar meat and marinated pork.

The condition of the stalls is not very hygenic but the curry with wild boar meat is delicious and fragrant while the pan mee is great. There’s nothing special with the soup actually except that the noodle’s texture which was very smooth and springy.

Not sure if the hawker operates in the day because we went there at night. Nevertheless if you’re in the area you could give it a try.

Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme came to Malaysia this year. It was a few months back i think and everyone was extremely excited. This particular doughnut franchise is very popular it seems, the only chance to get a taste is when you’re travelling overseas – nearest in Indonesia or Philippine.

Yeah, i know i’m a little outdated for i don’t go to Bukit Bintang area too often and the only Krispy Kreme outlet is at Berjaya Times Square. However, friends and family had already tried the doughnuts and surprise, surprise, they didn’t like it at all. I recall a lot of people was raving about how delicious the doughnuts were before it came to Malaysia.

Cappuccino Kreme and Hershey’s Dark Chocolate

Oh well, last weekend we were at Jalan Imbi for some business so we decided to try Krispy Kreme for ourselves. We sat down with the Cappuccino Kreme and Hershey’s Dark Chocolate on the tray and took a bite.

Both of us didn’t like it. After the first bite we were reluctant to finish the doughnuts. The dough was rough and a little dry while the frosting on top was so darn sweet it almost caused me toothache :( . The cappuccino cream inside was too sweet too. As for the pieces of dark chocolate on top of Hershey’s Dark Chocolate flavor didn’t exactly go well with the doughnut. It was again too sweet and weird. Fortunately we had enough sense not to buy a whole dozen.

Has Krispy Kreme gone wrong or is it just the Malaysian franchise? I bet it’s the later.
