Kalare Night Bazaar in Chiang Mai was really fun and exciting. As much as it was a shopping destination, it also is known for it’s cultural performances. Unfortunately at the time we were there for a visit we didn’t get to see any show. I guess we missed it.

However, the sight of the many colorful merchandises such as bags, fashion accessories, wood carvings and home decorative lightened up our mood. It’s all very pretty and at an affordable price too. :)

Kalare Night Bazaar also have a wide open-spaced food court offering a variety type of cuisine from Thai food to Italian cuisine. Most of the patrons are tourists curing their hunger and resting their tired feet after shopping at the bazaar.

The fried kangkung (water spinach) with porked, tomato with a pungent sauce of shrimp paste were awesome. None of the bitter taste you always get from poorly cooked kangkung.

However, the steamed fish with lemon was a disappointment, so were the cockles. The fish was not fresh at all and the cockles were burnt and not really clean.

It wasn’t worth the 700 Baht we paid for at all. I think we would have better luck at the other seafood restaurant nearby.

Ratana’s Kitchen, Chiang Mai

While Ratana’s Kitchen is not the best place for authentic Thai food, it was the only eatery within walking distance to out guest house. The scorching sun was really unbearable in the late afternoon, if it had not been because we were terribly hungry after the journey from Bangkok, we would have tucked ourselves comfortably on our hotel bed enjoying the air-con.

Ratana’s Kitchen serves Thai food as well as English meal (breakfast too). The Thai food is kind of toned down to suite tourists’ taste. I did not have high expectation since it’s a tourist haunt. LOL.

The first thing we ordered were of course ice cold water to quench our thirst. It was so hot i was feeling a little dizzy.

They serve decent seafood tom yum. It’s not very strong or thick and not too spicy. Mediocre to say the least but still nice enough for us to finish the whole bowl.

I noticed that Thailand have great tasting pork. This fried vegetable with pork is no difference. A simple dish but the pork was very sweet. Yummy!

One of the best thing i had in Ratana’s is the mango sticky rice. Definitely the best i ever had. The sticky rice and the santan was so rich in flavor that i almost licked the plate! The mango was the sweetest too. I’m drooling while recalling that dish. It was superb.

Nap Mat

You know how i’m into pretty looking things so i can’t get enough of posylane.com. They have some absolutely fun and great looking stuff available online.

Like the nap mat i found from that website. It’s not big enough for me because it’s for toddlers and kids but i can’t help browsing and secretly picked out the ones i like. The mats are just too cute! My favorites are the “Cavichi Rock Heiress Nap Mat” and the “Cavichi Rockin’ Out Nap Mat”. It’s padded and lined with nylon and cotton, very comfortable indeed. Plus it’s very fashionable too since the mat comes with a Velcro closure so you could roll it up for carrying.

Besides that, i also love the laundry bag and towel wrap that comes in assorted colors. Both are perfect as gifts to love ones. You can purchase the mint bath towel and laundry bag separately or together since it also comes in matching pairs and it could be personalized too by adding a name or mammogram. Irresistable!

There’s a new steamboat restaurant in Kepong that we wanted to try for quite some time. According to Mr. Bf’s friend they have another branch in Jalan Imbi and the steamboat they offer is quite not the ordinary.

The steamboat restaurant i am talking about is the Hong Fook Steamboat Restaurant located between the many row of eateries at Taman Usahawan Kepong.

Upon entering the restaurant, we could smell the pungent aroma of chili and pepper. This is because the restaurant offer something like a China-style steamboat with super spicy soup base (ma lat fo wo).

Just take a peep at the spicy soup and you’ll see the many black pepper seeds in the red soup!

The restaurant have a very wide range of meat and other steamboat ingredient selection such as frog meat, mutton, beef, deer meat, pig intestine and even pig brain if you dare. The selection is endless, even mushrooms comes in many varieties.

On the table, are for small containers with dips/sauces to add taste. Pink one is the fermented beancurd paste, yellow one is the sesame paste, while the green stuff is a mixture of blended vegetable. The staff recommend that we take a bit of everything and mix it up for the best taste. Personally, i would leave out the green stuff though coz it taste kind of weird. LOL!

Sauces/dip

I could get use of this kind of steamboat coz it’s only spicy on the first few bite. After that it taste delicious.

The service was excellent but price wise is alright but a little more expensive than normal steamboat. It cost us RM107.50 for just 4 person, for 12 kind of ingredient including deer meat, pork, pork balls, 2 types of mushroom, bamboo shoots, cabbage, and other type of meat balls.

Chaowdin Buffet (Khanom Jin) MBK

While checking out MBK mall in Bangkok, we came across a rather interesting restaurant named Chaowdin Buffet or Khanom Jin on the 5th floor, opposite the popular international food court. It’s a buffet style restaurant serving all-you-can-eat Thai rice noodle for just a mere 59Baht per pax. That’s only about RM5.90 for a buffet dinner!

The place is packed with people with majority locals and just 2 or 3 couple of foreigners. Except for a couple the foreigners seemed to be enjoying to meal and obviously so were the locals. As we enter into the restaurant, we were quickly seated and we ordered drinks before joining the buffet line.

The buffet line consist of large containers containing 8 types of broth/soup to go with the Thai noodles. Some were sweet curry and some like ‘rendang’ with meat. One of the container has coconut milk. On the side are plates with different kind of vegetables for your selection.

Mr. Bf and i went to take our food separately so we could keep an eye on our shopping bags. Coincidentally we selected the same type of broth and similar vegetables for our Thai noodle which we later utterly regret!

It was the spiciest thing we had ever eaten!

Serious. I’ve never tasted anything so spicy before and trust me i can normally eat really spicy stuff. This is beyond spicy. I could practically feel my lips and inner mouth burn, just one mouthful and my stomach felt like it was on fire.

Silly us for picking the most apicy broth on the buffet line. The fact is i didn’t even noticed the pot full of red chilies until we left and took a second look. LOL.

We left after just one spoonful and spent the whole night without eating because our stomach was on fire.
