Yes, Bangkok is a wonderful city. Yes, it’s a shopping paradise. And double yes, it’s a place full of gastronomical eats. Yes, yes, yes!

Don’t believe me?

Look.

My fav is the coconut ice cream and roasted pork. They don’t make roasted pork as crunchy and mouth-watering here in Malaysia. It’s really just too bad. I would have become their most loyal customer.

There are many choices of restaurant and stalls when it comes to food in Bangkok. But for me the best place for really delicious food are road side stalls at night. As it happens we were on our way back from Pat Pong night market when we came across a few food stalls at the side of the road. The stalls were selling variety of noodles and rice and smelled appetizingly tempting.

Even though it’s just a street stall, the customer service was excellent. I guess it’s just Thai hospitality. They even helped us organized our shopping bags so that we could have our meal comfortably. :)

Dad had the seafood rice which was awesome. I loved the squid which was superb. But my favorite has got to be the oyster omelet. We had those the previous day in a restaurant which was also delicious but the ones here are absolutely heavenly. Once you tried it you’ll get addicted!

The pork ball noodle was equally great.

City Super Sale!

If you haven’t heard, there is a great sales going on at Accor Hotels. The deal is fabulously awesome! If you are a travel junkie like me then please don’t miss the Accor Hotels City Super Sale less you’ll regret. I mean, where else could you get savings up to 60% on hotel rates in 27 cities across 10 countries in Asia Pacific? Within a limited time frame only between 23 – 29 June, the starting rates are as low as US$25 per night!

Now, don’t tell me you’re not tempted because i am. As i am typing this, my mind is all over Australia. I’ve always wanted to stop at Brisbane on the way to the Great Barriers Reef and since Malaysia is so near, it’s actually quite a short flight. My concerned was the cost because the airport tax already takes up quite a sum of money, then there’s the accommodation to think of too.

With the Accor Hotels City super Sale covering 27 cities i am absolutely excited. Why? Because besides Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Sydney and other major cities in Asia Pacific, Brisbane is also on the list and i’ve got the whole trip all planned out too should i really have the chance to go.

While in Brisbane, i would love to stay at the Hotel Novotel Brisbane for no other reasons but for it’s location and convenience, pretty near to the sights and destination i had planned to go.

Day 1 would be spent on visits to museums and historical places mainly the Queensland Museum (to have a look at various human and natural historical artefacts) and the Maritime Museum (get a taste of Queensland’s maritime history) in the morning. Then to Mount Cootha for a great dining experience with panoramic views of Brisbane.

Day 2 would be of course means trip to the Australian Zoo originally set up by the Irwin family. I am a fan of the Crocodile Hunter and i can’t wait to have a look at the cuddly koalas, wombats and other wild lifes. Then i would head to Seaworld for some fun.

Day 3 is going to be shopping day at the Queen Street Mall. I’ll get some souvenirs and relax for the rest of the day.

Oh, what fun it will be!

Damansara Hokkien Mee

Occasionally i have this intense craving for hokkien mee which i must satisfy else i would be super cranky. Sometimes i have cravings even during midnight.

One of my favorite place for decent and affordable hokkien mee is the Restoran Damansara Hokkien Mee at Kota Damansara. They have another branch which is in Uptown Damansara too but i rather frequent the first.

Restoran Damansara Hokkien Mee – from http://jesseyui.blogspot.com/

The restaurant is a very popular haunt for foodies and serves delicious hokkien mee. In fact, not only that they do have other things on the menu but mainly ‘tai chau’. For first timers, the restaurant is difficult to miss since the big yellow signboard is really quite flashy.

A plate of me for 2 person would be around RM12.00.

2 of the things that we always order is the hokkien mee (but of course) and the fried yee mee. Both equally delicious. One thing i love about the hokkien mee here is the fabulous crispy lard. Not all restaurants doing ‘tai chau’ makes good hokkien mee, i’ve encountered some with really stingy amount of soggy lard.

The restaurant operates till around 2am which suits me fine because this means i can satisfy my cravings anytime. LOL.

Food Games

It’s a sad thing when there is no time to go scavenging for gastronomic food. All work and no good food to treat the soul isn’t what i call living. But sometimes, food has to be sacrificed for work i guess. No matter how much i despise it. However, this doesn’t mean i’m abandoning all of you foodies. In fact, i’ve found the perfect solution.

Cooking Games! I’ve managed to slot in some play time in between rushing for assignments and what else should a foodie play but Food Games right? Haha. It’s a good way to de-stress. Just when no one is not looking, i have a minimized window ready to be opened.

I can’t believe how fun these games are. Imagine working at a dining place, making pizza or cooking up some delicious food for customer and within time limit at that. So challenging! So far i’ve tried Spongebob Square Pants, Penguin Diner and Hot Dog Bush which is my favorite. My wrist hurt a little from clicking the mouse at such a fast pace but it’s all worth it. My score is excellent! You know there’s just one problem. There are so many more Free Cooking Games to choose from i don’t know which i should play first.

Pantai Seafood Restaurant

Are we the only ones that don’t gush over Pantai Seafood restaurant after a visit? Everyone else seems to love the place so much. However, i’m not so keen after yesterday’s visit. The service was awfully bad.

In conjunction of the coming Father’s Day, we decided to have an early celebration. Knowing how packed Pantai Seafood restaurant is especially during weekends, i made reservation a week in advance. The first time we were there, we didn’t get a table because the restaurant was full. This time we were determined to check out the very popular seafood restaurant.

We punctually arrived at 7.30pm but the restaurant was already very crowded with noisy diners and many people at the reception counter obviously checking their own reservation. Finally getting the attention of the super busy reception staff, we were asked to wait for someone to bring us to the table. So we waited. And waited. And waited.

After almost 15 minutes of waiting and extremely frustrated, we firmly asked the reception for our table again. This time we were led into the air-conditioned room to our table just to find out that our table had not been set yet. It’s still dirty with used plates and left-over food strewn everywhere. We had to wait another 10 minutes to get someone to clean it up.

I tell you, the restaurant is seriously short of staff! You would have thought that the restaurant being so packed all the time would have employed more staff but it is so difficult to get served at this place. I could see there were only about 3 staff who were supposed to clean tables, deliver dishes, prepare tea and etc while only 2 others in charge of taking customer’s orders in the whole air-con room. I suspect that these staffs are also placing orders on the 2nd floor because they keep disappearing.

The Chinese woman that came over gave us the menu but didn’t give us time to go through the menu. She stood there looking obviously annoyed because we hadn’t made up our minds. Then when i told her that we’ll have a look at the menu first, she just made a very rude comment and walk off! Just when we decided on our order, it took us another 10 minutes to get another staff’s attention. We practically had to stand on the chair performing the Mexican wave.

I had no idea that we had to reserve crabs and other seafood before coming. They should have told me when i called up to make a table reservation. We were there so early but almost everything were sold out. The crab? Out of stock! The mantis prawn? Out of stock! The Pantai special chicken? Out of stock! I have a faint idea that they have limited seafood that is affordable so customer had no choice but to order the super expensive live seafood from the aquarium up in the front.

What’s more infuriating is, they gave us the wrong type of tea and when we told the lady, she were pretty angry denying her wrong. Then she checked and found out that the foreign staff had made a mistake. She lost her cool. For just a minute there i thought she was going to strangle that guy because she was screaming and throwing things around.

Needless to say, our food came really late. We finished the peanut and waited for 30 minutes at the least before i had to summon the lady to rush it. It was almost near 9pm and we were starving. Dad was extremely tired by then :( .

To be fair bad service aside, the food wasn’t bad although not especially special. I simply love the 2 way Kai Lan. Especially the fried and shredded Kai Lan leaves. Very crunchy. The vinegar Pork Ribs were equally good too. the skin is fried to golden perfection and very aromatic.

Besides that the rather delicious Braised Beancurd, and Red Snapper, other dishes like the Clam in Superior Stock and Beggars Chicken was just average. Sis said the clam was not really fresh although i like the stock base. The Beggars Chicken on the other hand is not as good as the one i had in Segambut. The chicken wasn’t as soft and smooth, i think it’s not cooked long enough.

Our disappointing Father’s Day meal cost us arounf RM254.00 which is resonable. If only the service was better…
