Besides the tasty ‘kompiang’ and mou mou, there are other must-try Fuzhou delicacies in Sitiawan. One of them is fish maw. There are quite a few restaurants in Sitiawan that serves fish maw but one of the more popular one is the Bei King resturant which was featured on the news 2 years back.
However, while everyone else is visiting the famous Bei King restaurant, we went to the New Peking restaurant instead. Ok, that’s because Mr. Bf’s grandma is friends with the shop owner. LOL.
The place is a little old and run down. If you can’t stand the humidity, there is a room with air-conditioning which is quite decent. That being said, the food was great and the price is reasonable.
It’s my first time eating fish maw and i must say the Fuzhou clan really knows how to treat the taste buds.
At first glance, the dish looked like curry but it it’s not. The thick stew tasted pretty sweet, slightly sour and a little spicy. Very heavy on vinegar. The fish maw at this restaurant is cooked with vinegar, egg, bamboo shoot and chili. The fish maw’s texture is something like bean curd skin (fu juk) but much smoother and softer. Very tasty indeed.
Ps:// If you didn’t know and i hope you won’t be grossed out, fish maw is the the gas bladder or swim bladder or air bladder which is an internal gas-filled organ that contributes to the ability of a fish to control its buoyancy.
Another Fuzhou specialty is it’s sweet and sour dishes. We ordered the sweet and sour pork ribs which were superb. Same goes to the kangkung belacan.
Our lunch at New Peking cost around RM63 which was super affordable considering how expensive fish maw is.
Before we head back to Kuala Lumpur we decided to bring back some homemade Fuzhou fish balls for mom. Mom love the fish balls because it’s huge and springy. So we went to the Sitiawan morning wet market to get some.
The fish balls are are delicious because they are stuffed with salted minced pork and prawns. You could choose to buy the smaller ones or the bigger ones.
The Fuzhou fish balls are also available at a few places in Kuala Lumpur but it’s not as fresh. Sister’s bf once bought some from Pudu but it wasn’t as good. So if you are in Sitiawan, it’s not a bad idea to wake up early for a stroll at the wet market. Be early coz the fish balls sells fast!

Prawn and minced pork stuffing
There is another specialty in Sitiawan that i did not get to try. It’s the red wine mee sua. Mr. Bf’s grandma made some at home but mine had too much red wine in it so it tasted a little weird. LOL. It’ll be on the top of my list next time i pay a visit to the town. ![]()
