Last night with the family and the boyfriend, we went looking for a place for dinner. Unfortunately, most of the restaurants were either too crowded or are closed for the festive season. So we drove back to kepong and fortunately Sai Gong was open. I’ve heard mostly good reviews about this Chinese restaurant and wanted to pay a visit for a long time.

The place was so crowded, they had to set up tables on the side of the street. It was so crowded, the staff had to set a table for us right outside Sai Gong’s neighboring shop which luckily is closed for the day. So, the pictures i took is quite poor since the lighting was terrible. LOL.

What’s Chinese New Year without ‘lou sang’ right?

The yee sang came with salmons strips which was yummy. But i was quite disappointed at the portion, very small. Each of us (there were 7 of us) could only have a bite!

Lou sang! Higher, higher, higher!

The (drunken) boss recommended the steam fish (hung jou yue) which i have no idea what’s it called in English. Is it red snapper? But it taste like tomyam fish. There’s petai with the paste too. Nevertheless, i enjoyed this dish because it was super sour and very appetizing.

Oh, pardon the ugly picture of the fish haha!

The braised pork knuckle was quite good too but i didn’t really liked sea cucumber. Sis says it wasn’t really good. She told me it’s tasteless.

Another disappointment was the marmite chicken. It was very obvious that the chicken was fried and cooked separately instead of with the marmite sauce. So, there wasn’t any marmite taste (they were stingy with the sauce too). It tasted more like normal fried chicken.

One of our must-order is the Four Heavenly King. It’ll never go wrong! :)

Ok, i was pretty disappointed (oh my, i’ve been saying this word over and over again haha) with the food at Sai Gong. I expected better. Perhaps it’s the crowd.

Yue Sang – RM26.00
Tomyam & Dates Fish – RM60.00
Marmite Chicken – RM24.00
Choi Tam vege – RM10.00
Pork knuckle with sea cucumber – RM63.00
Four Heavenly King – RM15.00
1 Heineken – RM15.00
Rice x7 – RM7.00
Pou Lei tea – RM5.00

Total: RM225.00

The Thing About Weight Gain

Filed Under (Health, Moolah Reviews, Others) by kuanfoodfetish on 30-01-2009

As the subject of this post goes, the thing about weight gain is… it’s completely easy to gain weight, all you have to do is just sit on the couch and munch on a bag of chips and voila! Another kg gained! (I’ve been a glutton, stuffing cookies and minced pork slices for the past few days – Chinese New Year, and i don’t dare to weigh myself because i bet i have gained more than 1 kg in 3 days!) But losing the excess fat is like fighting a war. Determination and motivation does not necessarily work. What we need is a good strategy and tactic.

Some people find exercise is the best method to slim down but no all agree. For some, no matter how much effort put into exercising, it just doesn’t help to shed the fat. Maybe it’s not done correctly but my point is different body have different needs. Some people find diet pills quite effective.

The thing with diet pills are sometimes it’s just not safe. We’ve read about how dangerous those pills could be in the news. So where could you find Safe Diet Pills? Well, i’ve heard of the Best Diet Pills which offers Top Diet Pills that are safe for consumption as stated on the website. The website have lists of diet pills which are endorsed by renowned and reliable American and UK Doctor, Euro Profession Medical Herbalist, leading nutritionist and nutritional adviser and its information for comparison. They have brands like Proactol, Proshape RX, Hoodia Gordonii Plus, UniqueHoodia, Dietrine, Avatrim, Relagen and even Acai Berry Select. All you have to do is read the reviews. For example, click if you click on ‘Proactol Reviews‘ you’ll find a whole lot of information such as how it works and its ingredients.

Look, the correct strategy in losing weight is finding the right strategy or in other words the suitable method for your body.

Sitiawan Famous James Cendol

Another stop in Sitiawan is the cendol stall near Mr.Bf’s grandma’s place. It’s right opposite the India temple. Actually there’s 2 cendol stall opposite the temple. Look out for the one operated by an Indian man with a bow tie named James.

This particular cendol stall had received many positive reviews for years, partly because of the delicious cendol and partly because the owner and very often his family too dresses up like a real top chef (complete with a red bow tie and chef hat) while managing the stall.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to meet James that day. I assume that the Indian woman and the boy is his wife and son who was manning the stall. Instead there was a big framed photo of him together with Sultan of Perak placed within the stall.

The cendol lived up to it’s reputation. It was creamy and thick, not too sweet like those in KL. The lady was really generous with the glutinous rice (pulut) too, there were plenty in my bowl.

That being said, i still think the stall near my secondary school (Convent Bukit Nanas) sells the best cendol. Unfortunately it stopped operating already.

Kompiang and Mou Mou from Sitiawan, Perak

Filed Under (Cakes and Pastries, Food in Malaysia, Food in Perak, Food in Sitiawan, Fuzhou Cuisine, Non Halal) by kuanfoodfetish on 22-01-2009

When it comes to Sitiawan, locals would always recommend a few delicacies you must try.

1) Red Wine Mee Sua
2) Kompiang
3) Mou mou
4) Loh Mee
5) Fish Maw
6) Fuzhou Fishball
7) Cendol

Kompiang/Kongpiang/Kompyang hails from Hockchiew or Fuzhou provinces in Malaysia. It is made of lard, onions, salt and flour with either onion or minced meat (usually pork meat) in-between the biscuit which is then slapped onto the sides of a homemade traditional Chinese oven. It will stick at the side of the oven while it is baked for approximately 15 minutes.

Come and get it!

It was my first time in Sitiawan, Perak. Mr. Bf said that it’s a ‘must-try’ and so we went out on a Saturday afternoon in search of the famous biscuit. His grandma recommended a shop that according to them has the most yummy kompiang in town. If i’m not mistaken it’s called Sin Lay or something like that, you will be able to find it easily since it’s a small town. Turn in before the Orange Cake House.

Chinese oven

The shop was very old and very warm because of the oven. Very old school! One thing for sure is that once you reach the shop, you could smell the strong, enticing aroma of kompiang.

I couldn’t wait to take a bite!

Fresh from the oven

I don’t read Chinese and the grandma paid RM23 for 30 pieces of kompiang but i guess different stuffing and sizes of the biscuit will have different price ranging from RM1.00 – RM2.00

Kompiang!

Kompiang should definitely be eaten right off the oven while it’s still hot, else it will be a little hard to chew. You could buy it from the shop but if you intend to purchase more, you would have to place order one day before. People from all over Malaysia comes for the kompiang so they need a little time to prepare :) .

As for Mou Mou , it’s a multi-layered pau with ground peanuts and sugar. The pau skin is softer than the usual pau and taste a little sweet. Yummy!

5 slices cost RM4.00

I have no idea why it’s called Mou Mou but i just think the name is adorable.
