Like any other Taiwanese and Hongkie eateries, Fong Lye Taiwan Restaurant in the Gardens is often packed with patrons. Getting a table might be a pain, there is always a queue at the counter.

Personally i don’t prefer Taiwanese restaurants because there is no privacy at all. All the tables are placed so close to each other that there is no way to have a conversation without worrying others might hear what we are saying. It’s pretty difficult to have a conversation too when there are so much noise going on. I least prefer going to Hongkie restaurants for the same reason and especially because the food isn’t that good.

Fong Lye interior is cheery and refreshing with bright lighting but they also spot the same space problem that i dislike. It’s embarrassing to squeeze in to my sit with my butt practically shoved into my neighbors face. Oh, well…

The food though is not bad at all. If i’m not mistaken, the price is ranging from approx. RM8.00++ above.

The Braised Beef Noodle was good. Aromatic and a little spicy with slices of tender braised beef. The portion is big too. The noodle comes with side dishes of cube potato and carrot in mayonnaise, sliced celery and fried chicken in bread crust.

However, i must say i had better braised beef noodle ay Kepong. The soup base is a little bit diluted here.

My favorite is the Pig Intestine Mee Sua. Surprisingly, at RM9.80, this is one of the cheapest on the menu.

I was pretty grossed out at first when he ordered this from the menu. I am not a fan of intestines. In fact, i’m not a fan of any innard part of anything.

If you have tasted the Oyster Mee Sua from Shihlin Street Snacks than you should try this. It’s much better because it’s thicker and more aromatic. The mee sua is baby smooth.

Oh yeah, i kind of liked the pudding milk tea that i ordered but i think it’s too pricey.

Fong Lye’s food is alright and the service is pretty good. Our food came within a few minutes even though the tables are fully occupied. However, what i do not like is the spacing of the restaurant. I wished that i could have more privacy when dining. Moving around in the restaurant is difficult too with the narrow space.

Also, i think the food is a little bit pricey but still affordable.

Pig Intestine Mee Sua – RM9.80
Pudding Milk Tea – RM7.30
Watermelon Milk – RM7.30
Braised Beef Noodle – RM19.80

Total: RM50.85 (RM44.30 + RM4.42-service charge + RM2.21-tax)

Senjyu Sushi @ Cineleisure Damansara

Alright! Senjyu Sushi had made it into Cineilesure finally. It’s pretty exciting since masak masak and other blogs had been raving about the great Japanese food at the Senjyu Sushi in Sunway Piramid, complete with gorgeous photos that’ll make any Japanese food fiend drool.

Senjyu Sushi from the same company that manage Sakae Sushi took over Genki Sushi in Cineileisure. The interior proved to be more classy. Loved the green wine bottles design on the wall. However, i do wish that they paid attention to the open kitchen in the middle so to make it more presentable.

Sushi price

The sushi outlet still maintains it’s conveyor belt but the variety is not wide but let’s give them a chance since they just officially opened. The staff was a little bit jittery too LOL.

The sushi as usual are priced according to the plate colors. Ranging from RM4.00 to RM16.00.

We tried a sushi that is covered with black sesame on the outside. Not bad but the black sesame is roasted till too dry. Over dry sesame doesn’t taste that good.

foie gras and oyster
Foie Gras & Oyster Mentai Maki

The variety on the menu is also quite limited. I heard some of the sets are not yet available.

There are a few dishes on the menu that looks tempting. We ordered the Foie Gras & Oyster Mentai Maki. I’m not too keen on oyster because i don’t like the fishy taste but since the foie gras and oyster are fried (tempura style) with a tad of cheese, it was pretty good. The oyster were big ones too :) .

The fois gras (duck liver) maki was good too but the piece was really thin. I wished that they had given a bigger slice.

It’s my first time having foie gras and i definitely am going to taste some foie gras in the future.

inaniwa udon
Inaniwa Udon with Tori Ankake

Inaniwa Udon with Tori Ankake is my favorite because it’s simple but taste good. The noodle is silky smooth and the mushroom and chicken broth is thick and sweet. The portion is not big but perfect for sensitive stomach like mine.

tofu cheese cake

Tofu Cheese Cake

To end our meal, we shared a Tofu Cheese Cake which i heart. Of all, I love their dessert the most.  I heart cheesecake but it could get a bit too much but the tofu makes it less cheese-y and more refreshing. No guilt trip for over indulgence this time.

You know, the food in Senjyu is evidently pricey with dishes ranging to RM100++. The ingredients used is of course more distinct. You get oyster, foie gras, wagyu beef and giant scallop. They also have grilled dishes on skewers. However, i’m not ‘ooh la la’ – ed by the food. Good food, excellent presentation but taste is not really that spectacular. This few dish that we had already cost us approx. RM80.

Foie Gras & Oyster Mentai Maki – RM24.90
Inaniwa Udon with Tori Ankake – RM19.90
Sushi (Red) – RM4.00
Tofu Cheese Cake – RM7.90
Lime Juice x 2 – RM11.80
Wet Towel x 2 – RM1.00

Virgin Olive Oil Vs. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Filed Under (Halal, Mediterranean Cuisine, Recipes) by kuanfoodfetish on 22-09-2008

We’re not cooking persons before this (it’s too messy and takes too much effort)  but recently whipping up a warm meal at home seems quite appealing. It must be my age catching up with me. Cooking actually sounds fun. Not that i do most of the cooking lar. Poor Mr. Bf is a better cook than me. wakaka!

Hence this food blog is going to be missing on some outdoor food hunting activities. Judging by the lack of post in here, it’s pretty obvious LOL.

And you know what, shopping for ingredients to make a meal of spaghetti has been at least educational. Picking out olive oil alone from the long rack of selection was rather an eye opener. Now what is the difference between normal olive oil, virgin olive oil and extra virgin olive oil? (God i’m such a cavewoman to not know about this! Ooo Gaaa Boo Gaaa!)

Now, according to IOOC (that’s International Olive Oile Council) there are few retail grades of olive oil from member countries available in the market. The olive oil is graded based on contents of acidity and refined oil.

  • Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) comes from cold pressing of the olives, contains no more than 0.8% acidity, and is judged to have a superior taste. Extra-virgin and virgin olive oil may not contain refined oil.
  • Virgin olive oil has an acidity less than 2%, and is judged to have a good taste.
  • Pure olive oil. Oils labeled as Pure olive oil or Olive oil are usually a blend of refined and virgin or extra-virgin oil.
  • Olive oil is a blend of virgin oil and refined oil, of no more than 1.5% acidity. It commonly lacks a strong flavor.
  • Olive-pomace oil is a blend of refined pomace olive oil and possibly some virgin oil. It is fit for consumption, but may not be described simply as olive oil. Olive-pomace oil is rarely sold at retail; it is often used for certain kinds of cooking in restaurants.
  • Lampante oil is olive oil not suitable as food; lampante comes from olive oil’s long-standing use in oil-burning lamps. Lampante oil is mostly used in the industrial market.

To get the correct type of olive oil from the supermarket, you will need to learn how to read the product label. Some of us may not know this but different type of olive oil may be suitable with different style of cooking.

  • “100% Pure Olive Oil” is often the lowest quality available in a retail store: better grades would have “virgin” on the label.
  • “Made from refined olive oils” means that the taste and acidity were chemically controlled.
  • “Light olive oil” means refined olive oil, with less flavour.
  • “From hand-picked olives” implies that the oil is of better quality, since producers harvesting olives by mechanical methods are inclined to leave olives to over-ripen in order to increase yield.
  • “First cold press” means that the oil in bottles with this label is the first oil that came from the first press of the olives. The word cold is important because if heat is used, the olive oil’s chemistry is changed. It should be noted that extra-virgin olive oil is cold pressed, but not necessarily the first oils.

Extra virgin olive oil is mostly used for salad dressings and foods to be eaten cold. It is also used for frying ingredients. On the other hand, refined olive oils are suited for deep frying foods.

When extra-virgin olive oil is heated above 350°F (180°C), it will lead to deteriorated taste and possible toxicity because the unrefined particles within the oil get burned.

Now you know which to pick for a spaghetti or salad dressing? Get some EVOO.

I have no idea why but i love pronouncing the word E.V.O.O. Make me sounds like a pro even though i’m not!

Glorious Food Before Raya

What i love most about Hari Raya in Malaysia is the glorious food that is associated with it. Even before Raya during Puasa (fasting), the Malays had already started selling kuihs and rendangs and all sorts of delicious food.

While the Malays are getting slimmer by fasting, my waist is getting thicker due to constant Malay food binging. *Arrrgggggghhhh!!! I can’t help it. My brain says no but my nose seems to have a mind of its own. The aroma of Malay food is too much for me to handle.

buka puasa
Malay food galore

Along Jalan Kuching, before the intersection to Jalan Kepong; right in front of the old flats, many many stalls are set up everyday few hours before buka puasa (fasting ends). The whole street will be occupied by hawkers selling Malay kuihs, nasi lemak, asam laksa, murtabak, rendang and all sorts of Malay food.

We bought these for RM10.

for rm10
Ugly pic taken by Mr. Bf coz i was busy eating

It’s called murtabak bajet because it’s really made from a tiny bajet. Smaller than the normal murtabak.

That’s a pretty good deal right? However, the aroma is better than the taste. But i’ll give it a benefit of a doubt because by the time we got home the food was already cold.

Next week, rendang and ayam masak merah!
