Here’s something i didn’t know about shabu-shabu (Japanese hot pot). It was originated in the 13th century by the ways of Genghis Khan to efficiently feed the soldiers. The troop would gather around the large pot for a cookout and eating session. Doesn’t sound as classy as it is today huh? Nevertheless, this winter dish is quite popular here in Malaysia where it’s eaten all year round.

Nagomi Shabu-Shabu Restaurant is ever so busy

Nagomi Shabu-Shabu Restaurant not only serves shabu-shabu but also a variety of Japanese food such as sashimi, maki and sushi sets. But being in a shabu-shabu restaurant, you definitely can’t give the shabu-shabu a miss.

Nagomi offers few types of shabu-shabu, mainly sliced beef (Wagyu Ribeye or Kobe), chicken and duck meat. Also patrons could choose the type of soup/broth of choice. If my memory serves me right, there are chicken broth, duck broth and of course the more signature broth and the more popular one, the Nagomi broth.

The waitress recommended that we ordered 1 set to share which consist of the poultry or meat, mix vegetable with oyster mushroom and tofu and a bowl of rice. That we could add later if the portion is not enough. We took her advised for the set and selected Nagomi broth for the base. As we are avid fans of Kobe beef, naturally we also opted for Kobe beef. It cost cheaper than those in Ninja Jones. Here it’s RM139.00 for 120gram while Ninja Jones charge RM189.00 for 100gram.

The Wagyu Ribeye cost about RM30.00++ i think. So if you’re thinking that Kobe is too expensive you could always select the Wagyu.

For those who doesn’t know how to make do with the shabu-shabu, there is actually a step by step instruction on the menu itself. It goes something like this.

1) Add all vegetable into the hot boiling broth to enhance the sweetness of the broth.
2) Take the beef slice (or the poultry of your choice) by the chopstick and gently dip it into the broth. Make a quick swish, then take the slice out so that the beef is not overcooked.
3) Dip the beef into the 3 type of sauce (ponzu, sesame and garlic plus chili) provided before consuming.
5) Add the rice into the leftover broth and let the congee simmer in the broth for a while for the best taste.

I over did the swishing so it’s a bit overcooked LOL.

As we found out the portion is more than enough. The Kobe beef was as usual, tender to the taste. Although i must admit that it taste better grilled, it was awesome. The broth gets better while it boiled. The whole time taking in the sweetness of the meat and vegetables. We added eggs into our electric pots so by the end of our eating session, it was thick and just right before we added in the rice.

Aside from the shabu-shabu, the Sake Duluxe Maki was pretty good too. Of course we liked it coz we love ebiko (fish eggs) plus the salmon was very fresh. Not unusual but good.

Overall, i think it’s quite a good place for shabu-shabu. The environment and service was good. I should say that the price is a little bit higher than other shabu-shabu places but not too bad because the food is fresh and they offer top-notch quality beef. We would probably go for the Wagyu beef instead if we do come again. LOL Kobe beef is making us poor LOL. The only complaint i have is that the drinks are pretty expensive. RM8.00 for a glass of ice lemon tea?!

Nagomi Soup – RM8.00
Ice Lemon Tea – RM8.00
Jasmine GReen Tea – RM6.00
Kobe Beef Shabu Shabu – RM139.00
Enoki Mushroom (Add On) – RM5.00
Raw Egg x2 (Add On) – RM3.00
Sake Deluxe Maki – RM16.00

Total: RM212.75 (RM185.00 + RM18.50 – service + tax)

Hurray! My new food blog domain is finally up and running. After so much error and problem with redirection, it’s now ready. Noticed my domain named had changed? Would appreciate those who have linked my blog to change it from blogspot to http://www.kuanfoodfetish.com instead. Thanks alot!

Now let’s get down to business.

Dad had been raving about this new restaurant, Hong Bee Bak Kut Teh that he claimed to serve the best Bak Kut Teh. For the benefit of those who doesn’t know what the hell Bak Kut Teh is, it’s actually a Chinese dish whereby pork ribs and other ingredients such as mushroom and beancurd skin are boiled for hours in herbal broth or soup. Anyways located at Jalan Ipoh (no it’s not the popular Ban Lee Bat Kut Teh), it’s a new restaurant that i admit have great tasting Bak Kut Teh. It’s been a while since i had some thick herbal aromatic broth since most of the Bak Kut Teh places nowadays serve the dish with diluted broth.

The cook is actually a friend of my dad. He used to have his own Bak Kut Teh stall at Jinjang area which we would frequent but because of the un-strategic location, the stall was closed. Now he is working at Hong Bee as the cook. I can tell you that uncle really knows his stuff. I haven’t tasted any Bak Kut Teh as good as his since i had it as a child. :) *uncle should give me discount for promoting him LOL.

The Bak Kut Teh broth is extremely aromatic and tasty. Served with my favorite Yao Char Kway (fried bread stick), i couldn’t have enough. Plus the pork is tender. What i loved most is that everything doesn’t taste as oily because there’s not so much pork fat compared to other Bak Kut Teh i had.

Besides the great Bak Kut Teh, Hong Bee is also quite popular among patrons for its Sang Pou Pai Guat. The pork ribs here are boiled in rice wine from raw so that when the ribs are finally ready, the alcohol would have been absorbed by the ribs. Since this dish takes quite some time to prepare, patrons would have to order about 1/2 hour in advance and Hong Bee only will prepare this dish if there are more than 2 customers per table.

Can you see how thick the soup is? Thumbs up!

The roasted pork was equally delicious. We ordered another pot of these. Again the pork is very tender, not those hard to chew type. Sweet and aromatic.

I should think that this is one of the best Bak Kut Teh places i’ve been too. The place is clean and spacious. Would definitely recommend it to friends. :)

1 x Sang Pou Pai Guat
2 x Roasted Pork
1 x Bak Kut Teh
1 x Green vegetable
1 x Yao Char Kway
8 x rice

Total: RM120.00 (sorry there is no exact price for each dish because the lady boss didn’t provide receipt and i forgot to ask)

And here i thought that Amcorp Mall non-existent anymore, Pipu suggested that we head there for Korean food for Huey’s birthday.

Restaurant Haeun Khon
Restaurant Haeun Khoh

Restoran Haeun Khon is quite popular among foodies for it’s affordable Korean food. The eatery is small and interior has alot more to be desired but i must admit that the food is excellent.

Kim Chi Jjikeh set

Pipu had the Kim Chi Jjikeh which is one of the more poplar dish among patrons. It’s something like a Korean hotpot with chicken and vege in kim chi soup. The set also comes with rice and small side dishes of kim chi, Korean pancake, tofu with chili and soy sauce and watermelon.

kim chi jjikeh
Kimchi Jjikeh

As the kim chi soup is quite sour and spicy, it’s not for those that can’t take spicy food at all. However, personally it’s my favourite. Definitely good for lunch coz it would wake you up in no time.

bul jung sik sou
Bulgogi Jung Sik Sou

The Bulgogi Jung Sik Sou was equally delicious. Also comes in a set, this hotpot includes enoki mushroom (my fav!), beef, vege and red dates. The combination makes the hot pot of soup sweet and aromatic. The beef was quite tender too.

The name Dol Sot Pi-Pim-Pab might sound like a children’s toy, but it’s the name of Korean styled stirred rice. The rice and, chicken, vege and other ingredients are served as a hot stone bowl that keeps the food cooking while you eat. The black sesame makes the whole dish somewhat more aromatic but i find it too dry. The portion is quite huge too. I would have a hard time finishing it. LOL.
