I’ve heard of John King Egg Tart in Pavilion but didn’t get a chance to try it because i don’t really frequent Pavilion. The traffic pisses me off *wakaka!

Anyway, there is a new John King outlet opened in 1 Utama. Situated at the Lower Ground Floor Just opposite the Laksa Shack.

John King Egg Tart is said to be originally from Hong Kong. The outlet offers a wide range of egg tarts and also siu pao, chicken pie and lou phor peng. The flavors are rather interesting. Definitely something new in the egg tart arena. There’s Red Bean Tart, Durian Tart, Corn Tart, Green Tea/Macha Tart, Coffee Tart, Original Egg Tart and White Egg Tart. The original egg tarts also comes with 2 different crust; flaky or cookie.

The tarts goes at RM1.60 to RM2.00 depending on the flavors. However, now they are having a special promotional package whereby half a dozen tarts (6 tarts) is priced at RM9.50 regardless of flavors.

From RM1.60 to RM2.00

Needless to say, i bought a box of half dozen.

I find that the crust is soft but the egg tart filling is too liquid and soggy. Kind of like eating a hot cheese tart rather than an egg tart. I had a hard time eating it because the whole thing keeps falling apart. Maybe i should have let it sit and cool before sinking my teeth into it.

The Green Tea Egg tart tasted really weird but the rest of it is not bad. I loved the Corn Egg Tart the best. Call me old fashion but i still prefer the Tong Kee egg tart texture. Overall i give it a 4/5 for innovation but a 3/5 for yummylicious.

Finally Sushi Zanmai has come 1 to Utama. Hurray! I frequent 1 Utama so it’s good for me. It’s located at 2nd Floor, New Wing. Directly opposite Parkson; nearby Dragon-i. Very hard to miss.

Since the outlet’s opening, the queue was so darn long that i didn’t have the mood to wait.

Go away lar people!

Thank god there weren’t as much people last night. Most of the crowd waiting to be seated were families so for couple like us, it was much easier to get a seat.

Sushi Zanmai is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. Like other similar restaurants, the price of the sushi on the belt depends on the colour of the plate. Price ranging from RM1.80 to RM6.00. Just take your pick.

It was quite pleasant to find some sushi that is different from other restaurants. Normally they’ll only have the same type such as ebiko, unagi, california roll and other same ol’ same ol’. Here, they serve some quite tasty sushi. One of my favourite is the smoked salmon with sweet tofu skin. Although i forgot to check the name of the sushi, i distinctively taste smoked salmon in it. LOL.

The Chawanmushi was great. Baby smooth and cheap too. It cost only RM4.80 while other restaurants would have billed you a RM5.00-RM6.00 for a cup.

We also shared the small Tendon set. It’s actually tempuras served with rice. I’m not a fan of tempuras so i have no idea why he ordered. The dish includes a prawn, lady finger, eggplant and sweet potato; all fried in tempura batter. I find it a little too dry. They should have added more sweet gravy.

Also a bit disappointing is the Kaki Fry Roll. It didn’t look like anything in the menu at all. At first we thought the staff brought the wrong dish to our table. It’s supposed to be fried oyster with spicy sauce. Although it was quite good, i didn’t really taste any oyster and the sauce is not spicy at all. Instead it tastes a little bit like Spider Roll.

The food is not fantastic, it was good. I still think that Sushi Zanmai is a good place for affordable sushi. For that price, it’s better than Sushi King and Genki Sushi for sure. It’s even way better than Yo! Sushi.

Kaki Fry Roll – RM9.80
Chawanmushi – RM4.80
Tendon – RM8.80
Sushi – Pink Plate (x3) – RM11.40
Wet tissue (x1) – RM0.20
Ocha/Green tea (x2) – RM2.00

Total: RM42.55 (RM37.00 + RM3.00 – service + RM1.85 – tax)

It was Father’s Day. We had made up our mind to have an early celebration at Dragon-i, 1 Utama mainly because we don’t fancy the one in the Curve for its lack of privacy (it’s too crowded and not as spacious). Actually i’ve been to this place few times but it was ages ago. Since i discovered Crystal Jade, it was bye bye to Dragon-i *wakaka! But dad hasn’t eaten here before so there we went.

It’s was good to find out that they have introduced some new dishes on the menu.

cold pork shank
Cold Pig Shank

The Cold Pig Shank (shank is somewhere on the lower leg of the pig) is eaten as an appetizer. As it is with the name of the dish, it’s eaten cold. I was a bit skeptical about this dish because it looks quite raw. I’ve never eaten meat cold before except for sashimi which i don’t really fancy. However, it wasn’t so bad. Crunchy but i won’t order it in the future. The jellyfish that comes with it was superb though.

siew lung pao
Siew Lung Pao

Of course we did gobbled up our share of “siew lung pao” which i simply love.

sautee chicken
Sauteed Chicken with Dried Chili

One of the popular dish at Dragon-i is the Sauteed Chicken with Dried Chili. It comes in a basket and it looks pretty intimidating. The small popcorn size pieces of chicken are fried and served with a whole lot of dried chili. Just looking at it makes you feel warm.

This is one of my favorite dish here. Just be careful you don’t bite too much of the chili seeds.

eggplant
Brinjal with Fish

Other dishes was quite good.

beancurd
Beancurd with mushroom

Another signature dish is the Shanghainese Braised Pork Belly. It’s served in something like a hotpot to keep it warm and it also comes with cute little “man tao” (bread). Very very nice. The sauce is sweet but and the pork is very juicy and tender. Enough to make you drool.

It’s supposed to look like this but i forgot to snap a photo before it’s too late.

Now i remember… -_-”

finish
Almost gone!

One thing i hate at this restaurant is the queue. It’s almost always too crowded. The queue gets too long sometimes. This also means that the customer service is not really good. There are always not enough staffs to serve the customers.

Cold Pig Shank – RM13.00
Siew Lung Pao/Shanghai Meat Dumpling (x2) – RM18.00
Sauteed Chicken with Dried Chili – RM20.00
Eggplant with Fish – RM22.00
Beancurd with Mushroom – RM18.00
Braised Pork Belly – RM23.00
Rice (x6) – RM6.00
Chinese tea (x6) – RM12.00
Wet towel – (x6) – RM6.00
Tit bits (peanuts) – RM2.00

Total – RM161.00 (RM140.00 + RM14.00 – service charge + RM7.00 – tax)

Table Manners in Paris, France Continued

Continued from Table Manners in Paris, France

Here are the next 10 things to take note when you’re wining and dining in Paris, France.

13) Salad without dressing is just ingredients. Always have dressing but don’t toss the salad until the last minute or it will go soggy.

14) Never cut lettuce on your plate because vinaigrette (mixture of vinegar (or sometimes citrus juice) and oil) makes the lettuce taste of metal. Actually this is when the cutlery was made of iron long long time ago but it’s still practiced today.

15) Never cut oysters or mussels. Pick it from the shell. Also the French have no qualms about eating seafood with hands.

16) Only eat shellfish in months that contains an ‘r’. This rules out the summer months when the sea is warm and storage is limited.

17) Never put a loaf of bread upside down on a table. It brings bad luck.

18) If you want to wipe your plate, use a piece of bread skewered on the end of the fork. Do not use the fingers to push the bread around the plate with your fingers.

19) Don’t dunk croissant or buttered bread into your coffee.

20) When having a cheese fondue, don’t drop the bread into the saucepan because anyone doing this will have a forfeit.

21) Remember that small furry animals is not cute. It is a meal in waiting.

22) Just because something smells awful doesn’t means it’s not tasty. For example, Reblochon cheese smells awful but if grilled over a dish of potatoes it’s sublime.

Bon Appetite!

I’ve recently bought a book written by an Englishman who lived in France for 12 years. The book is called “Talk To The Snail”. It’s very hilarious and ironic. However, i will only mention the useful section that touches on French table manners since this is a food blog so to speak :) (I will try to do a review in my personal blog soon. Be patient).

Here are the first 12 from the 22 things to follow when you’re wining and dining in France especially Paris. If you’re not in France, do take note too because girls would definitely appreciate it… maybe LOL.

Note: that i have edited and omitted some sentences that is not really appropriate to post here.

1) At the table, diners must always be seated in the sequence of man-woman-man-woman.

2) At the restaurant, woman always order first.

3) At the table, there should always be glasses for wine and also water whereby the water glasses should be bigger than the wine glasses.

4) Non-French wine should be ordered only in ethnic restaurant or if bottles of French wine ran out.

5) At the restaurant, waiters will ask who is going to taste the wine. Men usually do.

6) At home, the first drop from a new bottle of wine should be poured into your own glass just in case there are cork remnants. The women glasses are filled first.

7) When opening champaign, hold the cork and turn the bottle.

8) Before touching the food, it is polite to say ‘bon appetit’. Men should wait for women to have their first taste before starting.

9) It is polite to discuss food at the table but not for too long. Ask your fellow diners how their food is like.

10) Parisian thinks it’s vulgar to hold the fork vertically like a skewer while you cut the meat with a knife.

11) Knives should never be crossed (even in the sink waiting to be washed) because it symbolizes conflict.

12) Meat may be served when almost raw in Paris, so it’s consider an insult to send back the red/bloody meat to the chef saying it’s uncooked.
