There’s a new place that sells soya milk and tau fu fa at the footbridge from the Ikano to the Curve. *everyone is cashing in on soya products nowadays LOL.

Bean Soy station

The small set up is called Bean Soy Station. This tiny station definitely have the widest selection of soya milk and tau fu fa (bean curd) flavors. They have 8 types of soya beans alone and i think about 15 types of tau fu fa. *wow…

So many on the menu

I had a pleasant surprise because Bean Soy have something different on the menu such as sea coconut tau fu ta, lychee tau fu fa, lemon tau fu fa, cincau tau fu fa, pearly corn soya milk, pearly bandung soya milk and many other special flavours.

pearly_soya_milk Pearly soya milk

The soya milk price is ranging from RM1.80 to RM3.00 depending on flavors. The tau fu fa cost RM1.90 for a plain one and ranges from RM2.20 to RM3.90 also depending on flavors.

The Pearly Soya Milk was nice but the pearls is made from gula Melaka (brown sugar) which i don’t really like because it’s too sweet.

Kluang Station have a really interesting start. It’s very first coffee shop is located on a railway stop operating since 1938 in Johor. Famous for it’s great Hainanese food, it’s still running strong with several successful outlets in Malaysia. Each outlet conform to it’s open dining and vintage interior concept .

Unfortunately, i don’t really fancy the food here. Besides the nasi lemak and coffee, i don’t think anything else is that spectacular. However, it’s a good place to have a drink or light lunch at an affordable price.

Hainanese spring rolls

The Hainanese chicken chop was ok. The gravy is sweet and i have to say that he chicken batter was quite huge. Not bad at all. However, i was pretty disappointed with he Hainanese deep-fried spring rolls (stuffed with mushrooms, french beans, carrots, turnips and fried prawns) i ordered. It was too dry and quite tasteless.

Not my favorite place to dine.

Yee Wen Thai Restaurant

Restaurant Yee Wen (Thai Food) looks like a hut more than anything. Located in Kepong (oppositre Giamax) at a secluded alley where the neighboring buildings are mostly goods manufacturers and factories, it’s easy to miss. It only happen that we often took that alley for a short cut to home that we noticed it at first. We went there for a simple dinner yesterday.

The place is quite shabby but it’s clean nevertheless. One advice though if you’re planning for a visit…at all cost, wear long pants. I was scratching away at mosquito bites the whole time i was there. Well, it might be coz it just stopped raining but just in case.

Shabby huh?

I find this restaurant a lil bit peculiar because the menu doesn’t have any description (no English alright) except for the name of dishes on the front page which was in Chinese. There wasn’t any price stated too. The rest of the thick menu is just photos of unnamed dishes. *that makes food ordering a bit difficult right -_-”. In this case, don’t worry coz the owner speaks Chinese and although most of the staff speaks Thai, some speaks Malay as well. We asked the owner for information and found out that a lot of the food are not in the menu.

tomyam
Seafood tomyam… the pot looks bigger in pics LOL!

The seafood tom yam was not bad at all. Very spicy and the soup was quite thick. Then again, i think no one could go wrong with tom yam *wakaka! However, the prawns are not as big as other Thai restaurants and i had smoother ones.

fried_vege
Fried vegetable

For a light dinner we only ordered a fried vege and some pandan chickens. The vegetable (those leafy vege used in Pan Mee) was alright. Nothing special. The pandan chicken tasted somehow different. Not as aromatic and good as i expected but it was ok and moist.

Pandan Chicken

The bill came to a total of RM42 which i to me was a bit over-priced for only 3 main dishes and for something so common. But they have other quite out of the ordinary dishes on the menu i did not order. It might be a pleasant surprise. Who knows.

I did not get my hands on the receipt coz it was hand written on a small piece of paper. This is the estimation.

Rice ( x3 ) – RM3.00
Pandan Leave Chicken ( x4 ) – RM8.00
Tom yam – RM18.00.00
Fried Vegetable – RM8.00
Chinese tea ( 1 pot) – RM5.00
Total – RM42.00

I Heart Juiceworks

…like totally!

Whenever i crave for a cup of fruit juice (which is very often), i’ll head on to Juiceworks. They have the best fruit juices ever. Well, it sure beats going to the supermarket to purchase fruits and going home later to work the juicer. All that work for a drink? No way!

juiceworks
Juiceworks @ The Curve

Among all the juice bars i’ve been too, i think Juiceworks definitely offers the best tasting and innovative concoctions. The drinks are divided into 8 categories. Cool Blends , Fruity Blends, Power Smoothies, Detox Juice, Dairy Works, Vitamin Boosters, Wheatgrass and Matcha Blends. That means they have all kind of drinks that’ll suit your cravings or health needs. Plus the names of the drinks are pretty creative and states the obvious.

papaya_drink
Yummy juice!

I’ve tried a few of the stuff on the menu, mostly from the Detox group such as Slimmers Paradise (apple, cucumber, celery & guava), Smooth Operator (celery, pineapple, orange & guava) and Spring Clean (watermelon, cucumber & apple). Among all three, i gotta say that Smooth Operator was the best coz there’s orange and pineapple in it which for the sweet and sour taste compared to Spring Clean which tasted a little too ‘raw’ for me. However, all of them are really god for the tummy… i have sensitive stomach :S.

The blended drinks are cool too. I’ve tried Guava Twister before this. Everything in that category are with sorbet. Great stuff!

This time i ordered the Tummy Calmer also from the Detox group. It contains papaya, pineapple, ginger and orange. The mixture is a bit weird and initially i was apprehensive about the taste. The first sip was weird because of the heavy ginger taste. But it gets better after the second sip. The orange actually covered the papaya taste but the drink was a bit thick and milky due to the papaya. Not bad at all.

Next time, i’m going for the Matcha (green tea) Blends!<

KOTO Restaurant

As planned, we visited the famous non profit KOTO (Know One Teach One) Restaurant on the last day in Hanoi. First, to show support for it’s youth program and second for the food of course *wakaka!

koto
KOTO a place for people all across the world

KOTO is located opposite of Temple of Literature on Van Mieu Street. It’s hard to miss the restaurant, it being the corner building among the whole row of old vintage-like shops on that street. Here’s another easy tip to find the restaurant. Try looking for the building with flocks of foreigners, coming in and out.

ginger_tea
Hot Ginger and Lemon Grass Tea

The restaurant is medium sized but modern and comfortable. Very much like a western cafe. It’s packed with customers most of the time, mostly foreigners. We were lucky to found a table for lunch. Ironically, we were the only Asian patrons in the shop.

It was a very lively place filled with chatters of patrons especially backpackers discussing their day’s adventure in Hanoi. It would have been a nice place to sit and chit chat over meals if the place is not so packed and the table so close to each other.

tonic
A shot of tonic

The service was excellent even though the restaurant was crowded. The staffs were young kid i would guess in their teens who speaks fluent English. The program trained them well. We were seated immediately and our food came soon after.

I had the hot ginger with lemon grass tea to settle the cold weather while EatAllYouCanShung ordered tonic water. The tea was served with honey in a separate jar. I find the tea too spicy compared to the ones i had on Princess Junk.

banh_goi
Banh Goi

For the appetizer i absolutely had to have some Banh Goi. I had been dying to get my hands on them since i saw a lady selling it beside the street the day before. Looks delicious right?

banh_goi_fillings
Banh Goi fillings

Banh Goi is something like fried dumpling with shredded mushroom, onions and chicken. Dip it into the pickled mango sauce for taste. It looks like our curry puffs but with the skin is thinner and crunchier. Different peddlers or shops sell different types of Banh Goi in Hanoi. Some are with pork fillings.

fried_noodle
Fried noodle with vege

I was quite disappointed with the food at KOTO. The presentation was great but the food… lack in quality. The fried noodle with vegetable was more vegetable than noodle. It was good but not great. I had better at the street market. I liked the noodle for it’s crunchiness though.

green_mustard_fried_rice
Green Mustard Fried Rice

The fried rice wasn’t to my liking at all. Cooked with green mustard, it’s a little spicy and tasted a bit weird. The portion was really big but the rice was very very very *that’s x3! dry. Even the slices of omelets were dry. I had a hard time swallowing it.

However, i must say that this is totally according to my taste and there might be some other delicious dishes on the menu worth a try. *the French couple beside us was gobbling up the spring rolls and beef noodle! Overall, i still think it’s a great place to relax and fill the tummy… just pick something else to eat LOL.

Ginger & Lemon Grass Tea – VND20,000
Tonic Water – VND15,000
Banh Goi – VND40,000
My Xao Bao (Fried Noodle) – VND65,000
Com Rang Vietnam (Fried Rice) – VND50,000

Total – VND190,000 / USD11.88

*Note: USD1 = VND16,000
