The Soya Shop Has the Best Milk and Balls

The Soya Shop is one of the shops that i frequently visit. Here i am again at the cool shop for a snack.

blacksoya
Black soya milk is the best

This time i ordered the black soya milk, tau fu fa and soya balls with coconut fillings. I’ve never tasted black soya milk before but it was awesome. Its better than the normal soya milk for sure. Very rich and kinda have a sesame feel to it.

The tau fu fa was equally delicious as all the food in this shop is *wakaka! I couldn’t believe how smooth it was. Practically melted in my mouth. I urge you to try it if you’re ever there.

The tau fu fa comes with toppings too. So, you could choose whether to have plain tau fu fa with white or brown sugar or with chocolate chip, corn or red bean, almond flakes, longan and other toppings which is priced at RM2.80. I took the plain one coz the toppings sounds a little weird to me LOL.

The coconut filling soya balls was yummy but i prefer the red bean ones anytime. I find the coconut ones a little too sweet. By the way, i’ve tried the chocolate fillings the last time i was there. It wasn’t bad at all although i still prefer the red beans fillings.

Night Food Stalls on Hang Bo Street

Old Quarter, Hanoi is really a heaven for foodies. From morning till late midnight, there are food stalls up and ready to take in customers especially in Hang Bo Street. Yeah, even late at night you could see food stalls set up on the side of the streets or in the narrow alleys filled with customers. Most of the time its already packed so you’ll have to move on to some other stalls to see if they have a place for you. And here i thought only Malaysians eats day till night… non-stop.

Stalls at Hang Bo St.

Like any stalls in Old Quarter, the table and chairs are darn small. The mini plastic tables and chairs are made for midgets i tell ya!

There are quite a number of foreigners at this stall so we guessed it was safe enough. We picked a sit at the corner end. There were two foreign girls sitting next to us chatting with an adorable local boy.

Look at giant me … oops i think the chair is broken… i’m big boned…

Naturally the place was darn dirty but after a while we got used to it. You can’t expect too much at a night street stall alright… although i tried not to touch any part of the table while i was eating *wakaka!

heineken
My Heineken… shhh i’m not a drunkard ok!

Beside the reason that there are foreigners at this stall, another reason for choosing this stall out of many others is that they have an English menu. *thank god for that! They have Western dishes and also locals to choose from.

But first the appetizer was placed on our table.

At almost every meal (dinner) in Old Quarter, we were served with the appetizer which comprises of salad greens and a bowl of pickled raw mango to dip or wrap. Actually i didn’t quite liked it coz the mangos were tasteless but maybe its just this stall.

friednoodle
Fried noodle

We decided to have some noodle this time. I had the fried rice noodle with vege while he had the rice noodle with mushroom. The presentation wasn’t great and there are more vege than the noodle. However, the taste was awesome!

crunchynoodle
Crunch crunch

I’ve never tasted noodle so delicious before. Mine taste something like our Chinese Cantonese Noodle but its much more aromatic. The rice noodle was very crunchy even though its soaked in the gravy for quite sometime already. Its just like eating ‘keropok’.

Rice noodle so smooth…

The rice noodle with mushroom was equally fantastic. Smooth and delicate. One thing i love about the rice noodle here in Old Quarter is that it’s not filling at all. I mean you don’t get the feeling that your over-stuffed like after eating normal flour noodle in Malaysia. Two thumbs up!

Last Meal on the Bay

After an adventurous day climbing hills and feasting out eyes on stalagmites and stalactites, it was time for lunch. In fact it was our last meal in aboard Princess Junk on Halong Bay *sob sob!

We started off with Halida beer.

Then the chef came out to the deck with some fish cake.

Look at these giant shrimps! The size of my palm.

This is my favorite of all the dishes on this lunch. Marinated chicken with sprinkled of lemon grass. Its tender and juicy.

The shrimp, onion, peanut and carrot mix is not too bad too.

In Hanoi, almost every meal will be accopmanied by this lime + chili + asam paste. You can dip it with anything you like. Hmm… weird.

Every meal we would have beef. By the end of this trip i was getting pretty sick of beefs. However, the beef in Hanoi is really good.

The last course is rice and fish cooked with smashed tomato. Very sweet. :)

I must say that we enjoyed the meals on the Princess Junk immensely. The reason is not as much as the great food as the excellent service from the crew. Although by the end of our 2 days trip, i was… erm… quite bored with the menu, (*same ingredient every meal wor LOL) i still enjoyed the effort put in by the crew.

Shihlin Taiwan Seafood Tempura

Before we went for the movie Rambo (err… not really my choice in movies), we grabbed some Seafood Tempura from Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks. Shihlin brings Taiwanese popular snacks from the alleys of Taiwan’s night market to our shore. A popular favorites among youngsters especially, there are already 6 chains of franchise in KL and Selangor alone.

Shihlin is always packed with people

Actually i don’t really like the food there because it’s darn oily and too much use of flour but it was time to go into the cinema and this outlet is the nearest we could get.

The Seafood Tempura are shaped like potato fries. I find it too salty and heaty for my taste. Have to drink tons of water after eating this. At first i didn’t really know this was seafood coz i can’t really taste any seafood -_-”.

Menu… everything fried wan – taken from http://riceballz.lilnut.net/

I’ve tried the popular XXL Crispy Chicken and Oyster Mee Sua before this. Didn’t like the chicken at all. Although the size was really XXL (darn huge), actually the flour coated on the outer layer of the chicken makes up the size. You could imagine how much flour is on those fried chicken breast.

The Mee Sua however, was pretty good. I’m not a fan of anything cooked with oyster but this dish was quite tasty. It is made from 5 core ingredients for the soup base and served with oysters and shredded chicken. The noodle itself is very thin and smooth. Almost like eating porridge. Not bad at all!

If i go there for another visit (just for the mee sua), i promise to take a few photos ya :P

The outlet is very tiny. I’m quite surprised that people actually are willing to sit in the shop to enjoy the Mee Sua. It is always packed with customers no matter what time of the day. I think the shop could only fit 4 people inside and another 4 on the bar outside. Even so, everytime a person walks into the outlet he/she would accidentally grazed my legs. Perhaps the reason lies on the cheap price. Everything goes for RM5.50 only.
