I’m back from my Hanoi trip and i have lotsa delicious food photos to share! So, the next few food post will be dedicated to my food hunt :P .

Little Hanoi is situated on Pho Ta Hien Old Quarters, Hanoi. Do not mistake it for the other Little Hanoi on Hang Gai street. While the one on Hang Gai street is more like a cafe with western style menu, Little Hanoi on Ta Hien is a small and cozy restaurant with quite a few selection of Vietnamese fare.

Cozy place always pack with ang mohs!

The restaurant is really small and it is easily to be missed if you do not keep an eye for it. However, the ambiance is good and the lighting is dim and cozy. It was evident that lots of tourist especially backpackers prefer this restaurant coz the two of us were the only Asian in there.

We picked the table right next to the entrance. Its a great place to sit back, relax and watch the locals go about their business.

Cute vintage tea cup

As a start, we ordered 2 cups of Jasmin tea. It was fantastic coz it was freezing cold out there. Next, of course we had to have some fried spring rolls. I have to admit that Vietnamese spring rolls are top notch. It was not too oily and the skin was extra thin and crispy. Yummy!

The beef sautéed with lemon and butter was good but wasn’t especially delicious. I find the beef although sweet it was a little too over cooked and hard to chew. Served with rice, the dish alone could be really filling.

Doesn’t look too good in photo huh LOL

Also the fried noodle with vegetables was quite normal tasting. Nothing spectacular but not bad at all. Here there are using a thin kind of noodle. Something like our ‘yee mee’ but slightly thinner.

Overall, i find Little Hanoi’s food is just so-so. However, its a great place to hide from the busy streets of Old Quarters. A fine place to to fill the tummy, rest and relax. Nothing more.

Jasmin tea – 7,500VND (0.47USD) /cup
Beef + lemon + butter + rice – 42,000VND (2,62USD)
Fried Noodle + vegetable – 30,000VND (1.88USD)
Spring roll – 20,000VND (1.25USD)

(1USD – 16,000VND + prices are from my memory, so it might be slightly inaccurate)

We went to Jalan Alor looking forward for the famous ‘char siu fan’. This is the 3rd time we went hunting for the yummy dish but once again we were disappointed. On the first 2 trip, the shop was closed. This time the ‘char siu’ (braised pork) were sold out!

We had no choice but to have lunch at Lowyat Plaza instead.

Taro Ramen Japanese Noodle Restaurant serves ala cart ramen, ramen set plus some side dishes. It’s just a small shop on the lower ground floor. Right opposite Old Town Coffee Shop. I think there’s about 7 or 8 tables in all.

I didn’t know that they have other branches too

I had the Miso Chasu Ramen -ala cart (RM14.90) while he had the Taro Ramen Set (RM15.90). The service was not bad coz our order arrived just in time. *darn hungry k!

Miso Ramen

Sorry for the poor quality photos coz the lighting in the shop is orangy and i have no idea how to adjust my Lumix *whack myself with a spoon for being such a dumbass -_-”.

Anyways, although i still think Ajisen Ramen have the best ramen in town despite of the poor customer service, the ramen here is really not that bad. The portion is super big too.

The Miso Chasu Ramen was served with miso, sliced pork and corn. It was smooth and quite ok but i think that it’ll do better with less salt and more chili sprinkle. However, i liked the Taro Ramen much better as it was aromatic and not so salty. The soup kind of have a lil bit of mince meat taste which was delicious.

The gyoza wasn’t anything special. Tasted like any other japanese dumpling out there. Personally i think it’s ok and worth going a another visit if only i’m in that area of town.

This food stall is located at ‘wai sek kai’ Kepong Baru, nearby the Church of Jesus Caritas. Among the many food stalls by this road side, this one stands out because of it’s corny name which is Hoo Yee Kee *in Cantonese this means ‘easy to remember’ wakakaka!

hooyeekee
Hoo Yee Kee so its easy to remember like 123

Hoo Yee Kee is famous for it’s lam mee and prawn noodle. That’s what we ordered.

The shop is very yellow. Chair yellow. Staff uniform also yellow. Sign-age also yellow. Easy to remember also..

I have to admit the prawn noodle was one of the best i had so far. Very thick and aromatic. Served with prawns *abo then? and loads of clams or la la, you can really taste the oomph of it! If i’m not mistaken this only cost RM6.70.

harmee
Har mee

The lam mee was equally tasty. The is the gravy/soup thick and smooth. At the price of RM4.00 per bowl, there’s nothing to complain about.

As you know noodles are very filling and the portion here is just right to fill the tummy. Really not a bad place for some cheap and tasty noodles.

Taiwan Street Snacks: Iron Egg & Pineapple Pastry

Weee!! MagieeMe brought back some snacks from her trip to Taiwan. Taiwan is very popular for its variety of street snacks. Most of them you’ll wouldn’t be able to get here in Malaysia.

Here we have is the famous Taiwan “Iron Eggs” (Tit Dan in Chinese) and the equally famous pineapple pastry.

Don’t worry, the eggs are not made with iron nor does it have metal in its substance. It is actually quail eggs. The small eggs are braised over and over again until it become tight and hard before it is compressed into airtight packets. No preservative or artificial sweetener. Its call “Iron Egg” because of its hard texture.

Iron Egg!

Taiwanese loves this snack and they would have it all the time when watching TV or reading. The texture is hard and chewy. Harder to chew than chewing gum. I didn’t quite like it at first. Imagine yourself chewing on PVC… But once you start munching on these cute eggs, you can’t stop. My family finished the whole packet in a day :P

pineappletart
Pineapple pastry so big!!!

If compared, i prefer the pineapple pastry. It quite big and shaped like a cake. Unlike our local pineapple pastry which i find very sweet, this Taiwan pastry is soft and not too sweet. Perfect for those who doesn’t prefer sweet things.

This ChiaTe pastry is quite famous in Taiwan… i was told. The brand had been operating since 1975 till now and ranked as top 1.

Hmmm… i wonder where i could get other Taiwan snacks in Malaysia… any idea?
