We thought of having Vietnamese food for EatAllYouCanShung‘s birthday since it’s been so long since we had some. However, Viet Passion turned out to be quite disappointing.

Don’t get me wrong. The service was totally excellent and the restaurant has a great romantic ambiance to it. What i was disappointing was the food.

I’ve always thought that the Vietnamese dishes at restaurant’s like the Little Vietnam or Vietnam Kitchen are somewhat Malaysianised. I was looking forward to something more authentic coz all along i’ve heard from numerous bloggers and friends that the foods in Hanoi *especially the beef noodle are the best.

The chicken salad was bit too bland. Instead of fried, the chicken strips were steamed, thus it was not as crunchy as normal chicken salad. The gravy was uninspiring too. It lacked the aromatic sweet-salty taste of gravy from restaurants such as the Vietnam Kitchen. While eating this dish i could not help but crave for the appetizing mango salad we had at the Krua Thai! *sigh

We ordered a bowl of beef noodle. Who the hell wouldn’t right? Vietnam is famous for this dish. But… uhm… it was a real let down. It was practically tasteless. The beef balls were way too smooth *like fish ball not like those tasty rough-textured-like beef balls.

The only dish that was not really too bad was the rice with claypot fish. But that too was just so-so coz once again, it tasted dull after a few spoonful. I mean, did they run out of spices or what??!

Claypot fish with rice… just so so

So they have quite a variety of dishes to choose from. The menu was really thick. There were 7 types of salad, 11 types of noodles, 7 types of rice dishes and god knows how many types of other dishes! But i think the only thing that impressed me was the free flow Evian for just RM10…

I guess i’m not a fan of Vietnamese food afterall. Does outlets in the mall even counts? Maybe there are people who prefer mild tasting food. Either that or they had completely messed up the recipe in Viet Passion… I hope it’s the later coz i am really looking forward to my Hanoi-food-scavenging-trip!
