We were strolling at the Curve, Damansara enjoying the Christmas trees and decorations and wondering what to have for dinner. *i’m super duper happy when i see Xmas thingies. Happy will make me hungry kekeke.

We had Italian food, Chinese food and Japanese food for almost the whole 2 months, so it was time we had some good ol’ Asian cuisines. So, off we went a Nyonya meal at Ah Tuan Ee’s Place.

The restaurant was more spacious than i thought. I think it could easily fit about 120 people at once. The ambiance is good and comfortable. Bigger tables for family meals are set in the front and middle of the restaurant but as we walked in we saw smaller table decked outside the back entrance.

Back Entrance

We were most fortunate to get the best table. Right inside the back entrance facing the whole restaurant. I liked the smaller antique-ish looking table that could fit about 4 persons.

mirrorLike a display set coz our table was the highest and there’s a mirror beside us

We had the ‘Perut Ikan’ and Sweet Ginger Chicken served with rice. Normally i wouldn’t consume anything with the word intestines or stomach or such but the ‘Perut Ikan’ was really good. It’s cooked with 12 kinds of vegetables and herbs, brinjals, long beans, pineapple and of course tiny chopped fish stomach.

Spicy perut ikan

For those who are like me, not really adventurous with food, do not worry because you can hardly taste the fish stomach as it is finely chopped into cubes. The sweet and sour gravy was super delicious and really appetizing. A warning though coz it’s really spicy. Thank god for my lime juice! *wakaka!

Super sour but refreshing lime juice

The chicken was quite good as well. Cooked with sweet sauce and chopped ginger to give it a very sweet and aromatic taste. *yummy! I think they chose not too cook this dish with chickens that are too meaty because it would be less tasty as the sauce would not sip in easily. However, i think those 4 boney pieces could easily be gobbled up by only one person. So, if you’re ordering this, i recommend that you order another additional dish.

Service was extremely good. The staffs were very efficient and fast. Feel free to ask for recommendations. They are quite good at that.

Sweet Ginger Chicken – RM15.80
Perut Ikan – RM13.80
Steamed Rice – RM1.20 per bowl
Chin Cau – RM2.80
Lime Juice – RM3.80

Nothing is beats an occasional Italian feast.

After months and months devoid from pastas, linguine and the likes, we couldn’t resist another visit to Fasta Pasta.

Fasta Pasta has great pastas and pizzas. In fact, this being my second visit, i could say that ALL the dishes i had tried here were great and earned a two thumbs up from me. Compared to Italianis Fasta Pasta’s dishes are more dry (in a good way of course) and the portion is just right but of course everyone has their own say in food. *suckers!

fastapasta
Fasta pasta

They have the best drinks ever! Drinks are catogorized to ‘Tummy Warmers’, ‘Cool Dreams’, ‘Cuppa Tea’, ‘Detox’, ‘Totally Fuity’, and ‘Thirst Quenchers’… for obvious reasons.

I had the Miniature Multi Energy Booster coz it sounded fun and coz my face was full of stupid pimples. I needed a detox. It’s something like a tropical mix-fuit smoothy with a slight minty taste. *see the perppermint leaves on top? It might taste a lil’ weird on the first sip but it gets better after that. Taste like fruit yogurt but more refreshing. Yummy stuff!

energyboostEnergy booster!!!! Woo Hoo!!!

I had this the on my first visit and i loved it so much. So, naturally i recommended it to BlurryHunniee. *so i could curi curi a few sip muahahahaha! It’s called Caffe Choco Arancia. This is dead delicious especially for coffee and chocolate lovers. Fantastic coffee and chocolate necktar with whipped cream to top. What i liked the most is the sprinkle of orange rind that add to the aroma of brew.

A warning though. It gets really sweet when you reach the bottom. My advice is to stir it occasionally so the chocolate won’t sink to the bottom.<

arancia
Caffe Choco Arancia is to die for

There’s only one size for the pizzas unlike the pastas where you could chose between Asian or Aussie’s dish size. We had Contadina pizza. It’s with turkey ham, beef salami, capsicums, onions, mushrooms, olives, anchovies and fresh mozzarella on top. *err gobble it up before it gets cold!

Everything is served in thin crust. You could request them to sliced it into 6 or 8 pieces.

contadina
Ariba ariba! Contadina!

Fasta Pasta also offers something like a monthly gourmet specials. The specials for the month of November is Pappardelle Mamma Mia served with fresh prawns, garlic, capsicum and coriander leaves. Pappardelle are large fettuccine. It’s about 3cm wide. This is great coz it’s light and fresh.

You can find out what’s the monthly specials from the advert on each table or you could ask the waiter/waitresses. They’ll be glad to assist.

mamamia
Oh Mama Mia!

While the pappardille was fresh, Fettuccine alla Italiana has a more heavier and edgier taste. Topped with dried tomato and capsicum, zucchini, turkey ham, eggplant and tomato sauce. However, I still prefer the previous dish.

fettuccine
Fettuccine alla Italiana

As for the service, it was excellent. The staffs were really polite and know the dishes like the back of their hand. So do not hesitate to as for recommendations. Food arrives fast *it’s call fasta pasta ma! However, if you are ordering few dishes, my advice is to ask your waiter/waitress to serve it one at a time coz the air con is really cold so the food gets cold real quick.

Another tip: Do try the Spirali Calabrese. I had that on my first visit and o loved it :)

Fettuccine alla Italiana – RM18.90
Pappardelle Mamma Mia – RM29.90
Contadina pizza – RM25.90
Caffe Choco Arancia – RM14.90
Miniature Multi Energy Booster – RM10.90

Know One Teach One

Filed Under (Food in Hanoi, Food in Vietnam, Non Halal, Vietnamese Cuisine) by kuanfoodfetish on 15-11-2007

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , ,

There are 69 more days till my trip to Hanoi. I’m not overly excited about it. Planning is still stuck at ground zero. *meaning no planning at all lor! Don’t know where to stay, don’t know where to go, don’t know what to pack, don’t know how to get around. Basically, don’t know anything. The only plan we had confirmed is what food we are going to stuff our face with when we arrive at Hanoi!

We were checking out our Lonely Planet guide and came across an interesting restaurant called the KOTO Restaurant. It’s located at Pho Wan Mieu on Dong Da District, Hanoi (next to Temple of Literature).

KOTO

KOTO stands for Know One Teach One. What’s so special about this restaurant is that it is a not-for-profit restaurant and vocational training program which takes in street children in Vietnam. Youths are trained in the area of service and hospitality. It is supported by Street Voices (a team of volunteer from Australia) who works together in the project leaded by an Australian Vietnamese man, Mr. Jimmy Pham.

KOTO started out as a sandwich shop in Hanoi to now a full-fledged restaurant run by those kids, with internationally accredited hospitality program.

KOTO2

They do accept donations although it is not a must. So if anyone who reads this happens to be planning a trip to Hanoi, why not drop by for a meal to show your support? I will be swinging by that restaurant if time permits. *i wonder how much is a meal there… hopefully not to expensive :S

CLICK HERE to read all about it…. *read read. Don’t be so ignorant!!!

.
.
.
Here’s something from my Siem Reap’s trip few months back. I didn’t bother to edit the clip and to narrate. The quality is damn poor. *I don’t care. I’m having a real bad day. Sorry to those banana republics like me coz my bunch of buddies is talking in Chinese.

A brief introduction. ‘Balut’ is one of the Cambodia’s delicacies. Its duck fetus (sometimes already with basic features such as blood vessels and feathers) eaten with a squeeze of lime and ‘asam’. If i’m not mistaken, ‘balut’ could also be found in Jakarta.

Oh my… it’s near lunch time. I hope i didn’t spoil your appetite. Bon Appetite!!

Purple Cane Tea Restaurant Rox

I’m too sick to write anything that will use up my brain juice, so instead i’m gonna post this food thingy that i had drafted earlier.
.
.
.
Purple Cane Tea Restaurant rox my sox. It floats my boat. It rules my world. It… it… it… it made me say silly exaggerated things that makes me sound lil’ looney baloony.

purplecane
Purple Cane Tea Restaurant

I’ve been dying to visit the Purple Cane Tea Restaurant at Jalan Maharajalela since forever. Actually I went there once, but didn’t go in coz there were a bunch of noisy aunties standing at the entrance. I think they were having some auntie gathering or something so… uhm… no thank you! I had since then completely forgotten about it till recently when a new branch opened at The Gardens, Mid Valley. *woo hoo!

teapot
Nice clay pot… also available for purchase :P

Purple Cane is really awesome coz they serve something different from conventional Chinese cuisines. I really love the idea of dishes prepared using tea or tea leaves. I imagined that it will be more aromatic and fine tasting.

buer
Bu er

Being a tea house originally, it’s no surprise that they have an extensive choice of teas to choose from. We had ‘bu er’ tea coz it’s better for the stupid-gastric-infested tummy of mine. Eventhough they had served us our pot of tea, they gave us a mini sample of other tea which is available for purchase. *very good sales promoter haha

greentearice
Green Tea Rice

I can honestly tell you that the food at Purple Cane is awfully good and less oily. It may not look like anything out of the ordinary but do not judge the book by its cover. Tea really brings out the flavor of every dish in the house.

4season
Vegetable 4 in 1 cooked with pickle (long beans, petai, lady fingers, brinjal)

I’m not going to describe the dishes coz it would serve no justice but i particularly liked the ‘Vegetable 4 in 1 cooked with pickle’ dish coz the shredded pickle is really crunchy.

winechicken
Tea Wine Chicken – huge mushroom and chicken

When we ordered our food, we had no idea that it will be this much. The portion is quite big. I think 2 dishes are sufficient for 2 persons.

egg
Herbal steamed egg

I love this restaurant to bits. The fact that the service was extremely good and the crew was very efficient plus incredibly polite gets another star from me. We didn’t have to wait long for our food despite the crowd. And i loved it when the staff asked for our comments before we walk out of the restaurant. It made me feel that my say counts *eventhough if he’s just asking out of politeness :P

Bu er Tea (2 persons) – RM4.00
Herbal Steamed Egg – RM7.00
Vegetable 4 in 1 with Pickle – RM15.00
Tea Wine Chicken – RM18.00
Green Tea Rice (2 persons) – RM2.00
